About the position

The Senior Manager of Software Engineering at Walgreens is responsible for overseeing the design and development of systems software and applications. This role involves managing a large team of software engineers, ensuring the delivery of high-quality software products, and maintaining vendor relationships. The position requires a strong focus on architecture, performance, and quality, while also driving continuous improvement and innovation within the team.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the activities of a large sector of software engineers to provide desired functionality to assigned content, products, or services.
  • Accountable for the architecture, performance, and quality of software products.
  • Manage the development, testing, and implementation of software that meets established specifications.
  • Build software engineering action plans from strategic goals.
  • Manage agile teams in a continuous integration environment and deliver high-quality content on schedule.
  • Interact with executive management regarding development issues and opportunities.
  • Manage vendor relationships, including scope determination and SLA adherence.
  • Ensure delivery against agreed SLAs and overall service delivery of operational activities.
  • Understand short and long-term goals and recommend technical solutions and services.
  • Execute on functional and business goals for the group and anticipate process-centric ideas to move the business forward.
  • Develop and manage the budget for the functional area, ensuring delivery against budgetary goals.
  • Influence individuals within and outside the IT department and prepare reports for leadership.
  • Stay abreast of industry best practices and leverage partnerships to meet business needs.
  • Oversee and manage managers and individual contributors, ensuring ongoing training and development of direct reports.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and at least 6 years of experience in Engineering, Software Engineering, Architecture, or related field OR High School/GED and at least 9 years of experience in the same fields.
  • Experience with programming languages for online applications, microservices, mobile applications, or deployment automation.
  • Experience establishing and maintaining relationships with individuals at all levels of the organization, including the executive level.
  • Experience with vendor and vendor contract management, including SLA review.
  • Experience diagnosing, isolating, and resolving complex issues and recommending strategies to resolve problems.
  • At least 2 years of experience contributing to financial decisions in the workplace.
  • At least 3 years of direct leadership, indirect leadership, and/or cross-functional team leadership.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience managing Cloud Native or mobile native engineering teams.
  • Experience designing/building complex applications/automation.
  • Experience identifying operational issues and recommending strategies to resolve.
