As a Sr. Manager Application Engineering, you will play a pivotal role in the ownership, development, delivery, and support of our application value streams. This position is not just about managing a team; it’s about mentoring and guiding individuals to achieve their personal development goals while ensuring that the team meets its business objectives. You will be responsible for hiring, directing, and mentoring team members, creating an environment where they can thrive and grow. Utilizing Agile and Lean practices, you will identify and solve systemic issues that may hinder progress. Your role will involve consulting with management to analyze both short- and long-term business requirements, recommending innovative solutions that align with our strategic goals. You will leverage data-driven decision-making tools to support your initiatives and will be tasked with identifying and removing blockers that prevent your team from achieving its goals. As a leader, you will manage the software development lifecycle from initial concept through continuous improvement, ensuring that your team adheres to best practices in development, including paired programming, test-driven development, and CI/CD automation. Your influence will extend beyond your immediate team as you guide and challenge design processes, ensuring that the architecture and design of our products meet the highest standards of quality and reliability. In this role, you will also stay abreast of the latest industry trends in infrastructure, security, and DevOps, applying this knowledge to enhance our products and processes. You will be a thought leader in risk, compliance, quality, and security, influencing the strategic direction of your teams and across Discover. Your ability to articulate the product's vision and goals will be crucial in guiding your teams to work autonomously and deliver impactful outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Coaches and mentors team members.
  • Supports individuals to achieve their individual development goals.
  • Utilizes Agile and Lean practices to identify and solve systemic issues.
  • Consults with management in the analysis of short- and long-range business requirements and recommends innovations.
  • Utilizes tools to support data-driven decision making.

  • Manages software ownership and development from initial concept through continuous improvement.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field.
  • 8+ years of experience in Application Development.
  • 2+ years of People Management.

Nice-to-haves

  • Ability to understand the big picture/why of the product and have influence over it.
  • Understanding of technology needed to support the product and provide direction on that product's capability.
  • Knowledge of architecture and design to influence or challenge team's designs.
  • Experience researching the latest methodologies and patterns for product/application design and continually look to innovate.
  • Staying up to date on the latest industry trends in infrastructure, reliability, security, quality, and DevOps and applying that knowledge to work.
  • Ability to articulate plans to overcome technical challenges facing the team.
