About the position

The Senior Manager, Standards position at AIA is a pivotal role responsible for overseeing the development, maintenance, publication, and distribution of the National Aerospace Standards (NAS). This position requires collaboration with team members to ensure that the NAS library, which contains over 1200 active standards, is effectively managed and updated. The Senior Manager will lead the execution of the 5-year review process for these standards, ensuring that they remain relevant and up-to-date. Additionally, the role involves managing detailed transactions with the National Aerospace Standards Committee (NASC) and providing support to various AIA standards writing groups throughout the entire standards process, from project initiation to final publication. In this role, the Senior Manager will be responsible for operational management of standards development, which includes managing the approval and publication process for standards developed by AIA committees. This includes acting as the final reviewer and editor before standards are published, maintaining the AIA standards style guide to ensure publication quality and consistency, and providing oversight and direction to staff supporting the standards program. The Senior Manager will also be tasked with generating management reports on all NAS Standards activities and supporting the AVP, Standards in developing the annual department budget proposal. The position also involves significant support of the National Aerospace Standards Program Activities, where the Senior Manager will serve as the Executive Secretary of the NASC, preparing agendas, meeting minutes, and follow-up action items. The role requires attendance at off-site meetings, which may involve travel, and managing the NASC meeting budget, site selection, and contract negotiations. Advocacy and outreach are also key components of this role, as the Senior Manager will serve as a staff liaison to AIA's Nondestructive Testing Subcommittee and manage international harmonization efforts for the group. Overall, this position is integral to the success of AIA's standards development strategy and requires a strong ability to work collaboratively with various stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the development, maintenance, publication, and distribution of the National Aerospace Standards (NAS).
  • Oversee the execution of the 5-year review process for the NAS library.
  • Manage the approval and publication process for standards developed by AIA committees.
  • Act as the final reviewer/editor before standards are published.
  • Maintain and apply AIA standards style guide to ensure publication quality and consistency.
  • Provide oversight and direction to staff supporting the standards program.
  • Field standards-related inquiries to AIA.
  • Maintain NAS Project Tracking systems and generate management reports on all NAS Standards activities.
  • Support AIA's standards development strategy and assist in developing the annual department budget proposal.
  • Serve as the Executive Secretary of the National Aerospace Standards Committee (NASC).
  • Support NASC Steering Committee workload via teleconference; prepare agendas, meeting minutes, and follow-up action items.
  • Manage NASC Technical Advisor approval process and annual invoicing.
  • Attend and support off-site meetings, recording meeting minutes.
  • Serve as staff liaison to AIA's Nondestructive Testing Subcommittee and manage one of AIA's most popular standards.
  • Support standards development activities and outreach with AIA Member Companies, government liaisons, and technical advisors.
  • Manage NASC meeting budget, site selection, contract negotiation, and on-site hotel coordination.
  • Develop standard operating procedures and cross-train with other staff members.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in standards development and standards publishing.
  • Excellent interpersonal, research, and communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Experience in project management and meeting planning/hotel coordination.
  • Ability to work within large groups with divergent views to build consensus and unity.
  • Capable of making tactical decisions related to the above duties independently.
  • College and/or associate's degree or equivalent work experience; engineering undergraduate degree preferred.
