About the position

The Senior Manufacturing Engineer at Tesla, Inc. is responsible for defining and executing manufacturing processes for plastic components. This role involves assessing current manufacturing capabilities, developing strategies for future product programs, and implementing upgrades to equipment capacity and capability. The engineer will guide component design for efficient processing, support capital cost and labor planning, and lead engineering sub-contractors in process design and construction of new equipment. The position emphasizes innovative solutions and the optimization of molding processes to meet quality and production requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Define and execute Tesla's manufacturing processes for plastic components.
  • Assess current manufacturing capabilities and develop a manufacturing and capacity strategy for plastic components.
  • Determine effective methods to manufacture plastic components and implement equipment upgrades.
  • Guide the design of components for efficient processing through molding and assembly processes.
  • Support capital cost, schedule, and labor planning for new facilities and products.
  • Provide technical solutions and lead engineering sub-contractors in process design and layout.
  • Investigate and evaluate new plastics equipment technologies.
  • Commission molding processes and equipment through factory and site acceptance testing.
  • Collaborate with design and vehicle quality to improve appearance standards.
  • Optimize molding processes using a data-based approach to meet quality and production requirements.
  • Define facility requirements for plastics molding processes and support engineering builds.
  • Develop and execute production process validation criteria using standardized metrics.
  • Define a robust process control plan for high quality of molded parts.
  • Submit, review, and approve process changes for continuous improvement.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related field, and 5 years of progressive experience in manufacturing engineering, plastics molding, or a combination thereof.
  • Alternatively, a Master's degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related field, and 3 years of experience in manufacturing engineering, plastics molding, or a combination thereof.
  • Experience in equipment design and mold design.
  • Experience in setting up and validating robotic cells.
  • Knowledge of problem-solving methodologies including Statistical Process Control (SPC), Design of Experiments (DOE), or simulation techniques.
  • Familiarity with Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA) and Lean Manufacturing.
