About the position

The Senior Manufacturing Engineer at Tesla, Inc. is responsible for driving design for manufacturability and developing manufacturing processes. This role involves coordinating with other engineers, managing complete manufacturing line projects, and identifying new technologies to enhance manufacturing efficiency. The engineer will also conduct process failure mode analysis, develop equipment specifications, and collaborate with internal and external teams to ensure equipment meets Tesla's standards.

Responsibilities

  • Drive design for manufacturability (DFM) and develop manufacturing processes.
  • Identify new technologies to improve manufacturing processes.
  • Coordinate with other engineers and manage complete manufacturing line projects with multiple work centers.
  • Complete process failure mode and analysis (PFMEA).
  • Develop equipment timing charts and determine automation level based on payback time (ROI).
  • Work with Global Supply Management team to identify equipment vendors and evaluate them.
  • Develop line layouts and determine headcount requirements.
  • Work with industrial engineering to develop material flow strategy within the factory.
  • Identify utilities needed and utility distribution strategy.
  • Develop specifications for custom automation equipment.
  • Provide target cycle time, including OEE requirements.
  • Identify critical process requirements and quality inspection methods.
  • Develop testing plans for equipment acceptance testing and provide a testing strategy.
  • Collaborate with internal and external equipment integrators on custom automation equipment design.
  • Attend design reviews and provide guidance on station design.
  • Manage schedule, budget, and equipment punch list.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field (foreign education equivalent accepted) and five years of experience in an engineer-related role.
  • Alternatively, a Master's degree in the same fields with three years of experience is acceptable.
  • Experience in designing machines applying mechanical design concepts, including PLC programming, motion control, and safety devices.
  • Experience with robotics (Fanuc), including programming and IR vision.
  • Experience in CNC operations and commissioning/improving equipment.
  • Knowledge of Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) improvement and Preventative and Predictive Maintenance.
  • Experience in developing and improving HMIs and using Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Familiarity with safety, ergonomics, and spare parts management.
  • Utilization of structured problem-solving techniques, including DMAIC, Ishikawa, Five Why (5W), or Eight Disciplines (8D).
  • Ability to read and interpret basic mechanical drawings and electrical schematics.
