About the position

The Senior Mechanic position at the Laboratory for Nuclear Science (LNS) within the Bates Research and Engineering Center involves a diverse range of responsibilities focused on the maintenance and operational support of a multi-purpose laboratory that designs and builds complex experimental equipment. The role is essential for ensuring the smooth functioning of the laboratory environment, which includes various tasks related to equipment handling, facility maintenance, and logistical support. In this position, the Senior Mechanic will be responsible for crate and package shipments, which may involve assisting in the movement of equipment and transporting materials to off-site facilities. The role also includes assembling office furniture and partitioning, as well as assisting with the relocation of staff offices, which encompasses packing moving boxes, shelving, and office furniture. Weather-related maintenance is another critical aspect of the job, including snow removal and salting of sidewalks and parking lots to ensure safety on the grounds. Additional responsibilities include off-loading and delivering shipments to various research groups, setting up conference room tables and chairs for seminars, and assisting with the setup and cleanup of laboratory and office spaces. The Senior Mechanic will also assist in the maintenance of five facilities vehicles, which includes tasks such as inspection, registration, repairs, and detailing. Renovation tasks within the department, such as demolition, patching, painting, flooring, and furniture assembly, are also part of the job. The role requires performing general repairs to doors, locks, and equipment, conducting monthly inspections of fire extinguishers in research labs, and initiating a broad range of facilities repair requests in Atlas, ensuring follow-up to confirm completion. The Senior Mechanic will also liaise with outside vendors for renovations and arrange for hazardous waste pickups at off-site facilities, along with performing other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Contact outside vendors for renovations and arrange for hazardous waste pickups at off-site facilities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • At least five years of applicable experience in a similar role.
  • Performance of progressively more specialized assignments is required.
  • Specialized licenses may be required.
