About the position

Mesa Associates, Inc. is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our Power Generation West division, focusing on fossil and hydro power generation design projects. This hybrid position allows for flexibility in work location, with opportunities available in California, Arizona, Nevada, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Utah. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in the design, procurement, and construction processes associated with multi-discipline power generation projects. Familiarity with major power generation providers in California, such as PG&E, SCE, Calpine, NCPA, BOR, and USACE, is preferred. As a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you will leverage your expert knowledge in engineering techniques and procedures, particularly in mechanical design codes such as ASME, ANSI, API, and NFPA. You will be responsible for performing intermediate complexity engineering designs, which include analysis, calculations, research, and equipment selection. Your role will also involve developing comprehensive mechanical engineering design package documents, including design notes, reports, process flow diagrams, piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), and 3D model routing recommendations. In addition to technical skills, strong leadership abilities are essential, as you will lead the discipline design for large projects, delegate tasks to team members, and ensure quality reviews of engineering documents. You will also assist in project scheduling, work assignments, and staffing requirements to ensure successful project completion. This position requires excellent communication skills, critical thinking, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.

Responsibilities

  • Independently evaluate, select, and apply engineering principles, practices, techniques, procedures, industry codes, and standards to projects.
  • Perform intermediate complexity engineering designs including analysis, calculations, research, and equipment selection.
  • Develop mechanical engineering design package documents including design notes, reports, flow modelling summaries, process flow diagrams, piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), sketches, plan drawings, section drawings, isometrics, pipe supports, pipe stress analysis, datasheets, details, BOM's, specifications, 3D model routing recommendations, and other related documents.
  • Prepare sizing calculations and specifications for equipment including piping, valves, pumps, filters, tanks, boiler equipment, condensers, and cooling towers.
  • Prepare mechanical design packages for construction.
  • Conduct quality reviews of mechanical engineering designs completed by co-workers.
  • Review construction contractor submittals and answer technical requests for information during procurement and construction activities.
  • Assist in the development of schedules, work assignments, and staffing requirements to ensure successful project completion.
  • Manage personal task assignments and for designated projects manage assignments of other design team members to ensure adherence to scope, schedule, and budget.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or related degree from an ABET-accredited program.
  • 6-10 years engineering experience in the power generation or plant process industry.
  • Professional Engineering License (PE) in California.
  • Expert knowledge in code standard engineering techniques and procedures.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical design codes (ASME, ANSI, API, NFPA).
  • Proficient computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Experience with Pipe Stress analysis software including Caesar II and AutoPIPE preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with leading the discipline design for large projects and delegating work tasks to team members.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills and ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with PG&E, SCE, Calpine, NCPA, BOR, USACE, or other power generation providers in California.
  • Additional software skills including Bluebeam, MicroStation, AutoCAD, Vault, Plant3D, Inventor, ReCap, Solidworks, FARO Scene, and other 3D rendering programs.
