About the position

Kiewit Industrial & Water Engineering (KIWE) is seeking a Senior-Level Mechanical Engineer to join our team in Lenexa, KS. This position offers the opportunity for flexible work arrangements. Familiarity with current drawing and technical tools, programs, and software is essential, along with a solid understanding of design documentation creation and layouts. The successful candidate will demonstrate flexibility in work assignments and maintain a growth mindset, continuously developing their technical and professional skills. Kiewit Engineering Group, Inc. is a full-service consulting and engineering firm that serves the infrastructure and engineering markets. With a staff of over 1,700 engineers and design professionals, we have expertise across all major engineering disciplines, catering to sectors such as transportation, power, water/wastewater, mining, building, and oil, gas & chemical markets. Our Industrial Design Group is rapidly growing and focuses on EPC and design-build delivery of industrial projects, including specialized expertise in plant floor process design, packaging, and ammonia refrigeration systems. This position is located at our industrial hub in Lenexa, KS, and may require up to 25% travel based on project demands.

Responsibilities

  • Provide design, coordination, and oversight of various mechanical systems typical for biogas, bulk solids material handling, food and beverage, and other industrial facilities including process piping, conveying systems, dust collection, general plant/facility water, compressed air, and gas systems.
  • Manage the completion of all project design calculations and equipment specifications typical for biogas, bulk solids material handling, food and beverage, and other industrial facilities.
  • Coordinate and communicate all aspects of the project's mechanical design within multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Provide oversight and coordination of projects, working with assigned design managers and project managers to meet project budgets and schedules for all mechanical discipline activities.
  • Manage other design partners including construction partners, equipment suppliers, and other engineers and designers assigned to the project or task and review work progress and results.
  • Perform detailed technical bid analyses for equipment typical for biogas, bulk solids material handling, food and beverage, and other industrial facilities.
  • Generate and check design deliverables such as PFD's, P&ID's, process simulations, datasheets, and vendor shop drawings in accordance with industry codes and standards, contract requirements, and company standards.
  • Support the construction team including representing the design team on-site, answering RFI's, providing creative design solutions, etc.
  • Develop schedules, work assignments, and staffing requirements to ensure successful project completion.
  • Perform early project design work such as conceptual studies, process flow diagram development, mass/energy balances, preliminary equipment sizing and selection, and general facility layout/arrangement.
  • Train, mentor, and advise peers and support staff on proper application of industry standards and best practices.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent engineering program from an ABET accredited four-year university.
  • Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certification OR Professional Engineer (P.E.) preferred.
  • A minimum of 10 years of industry-related engineering experience.
  • Experience leading an engineering and design team is preferred.
  • Proficient in basic computing programs including the Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • Preferred experience utilizing AFT Fathom or AFT Arrow hydraulic simulation software (or equivalent).

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with biogas systems and bulk solids material handling.
  • Familiarity with food and beverage processing equipment.
