About the position

We are seeking a full-time Senior Mechanical Engineer on our Outdoor Product team in our Olathe, KS location. In this role, you will be responsible for providing advanced engineering skills and project planning for mechanical or electromechanical solutions or systems within our Outdoor product scope. You will be expected to complete the most difficult tasks as a Master CAD-user, including the completion of complex mechanical designs. Your knowledge of injection molding, die casting, sheet metal stamping, machining, material requirements, material performance, and material limitations will be crucial in this position. You will specify test plans, mock up, and test complex mechanical systems with complex performance requirements to validate and verify compliance with design requirements. Additionally, you will manage basic tradeoffs, determine risk mitigation plans, assess project goal/objective feasibility, provide technical input to product development plans/concept documents, and drive process vendors to evaluate complex mechanical designs while understanding associated risks. Leading explorations of new technologies and making estimates on moderately complex mechanical designs, including tooling, part cost, and design time, will also be part of your responsibilities. Your knowledge of industry standards and Garmin product qualification tests (environmental and others) will be essential. You will provide reliable solutions to a wide range of difficult problems using sound problem-solving techniques, offer process improvements, and author new procedures. This role requires a proactive approach to engineering challenges and a commitment to delivering high-quality results.

Responsibilities

  • Complete the most difficult tasks as a Master CAD-user including the completion of complex mechanical designs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or Aerospace Engineering.
  • Minimum of 5 years relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0).
  • Demonstrated knowledge and capability to use CAD software for completing complex mechanical designs.
  • Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with OnShape and/or Solidworks.
  • Electronic packaging design experience.
  • Interest and passion for the outdoors.
