The Cell Engineering team within the Technology group is multidisciplinary and focused on delivering qualified battery cell designs that meet operational performance targets, cost efficiency, and high reliability from controlled processes on high-volume manufacturing lines for Form Energy's utility-scale multi-day energy storage system. We are currently seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer with deep expertise in plastic welding and joining technologies to join our Cell Engineering Design team in Berkeley, CA. In this role, you will serve as a subject matter expert in designing high-reliability plastic components for various welding methods, particularly in challenging chemical environments. Your responsibilities will include collaborating closely with the reliability engineering team to develop test plans that demonstrate weld lifetime, as well as working with the manufacturing engineering team to ensure that weld designs are suitable for high-volume mechanical assembly operations. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the scaling of our multi-day energy storage system and to play a significant role in creating a sustainable future.

Responsibilities

  • Design and specify mechanical or polymeric welds for various mechanical interfaces in Form Energy's iron-air battery product.
  • Develop verification, validation, and reliability test plans to demonstrate that designs and welds meet functional and lifetime requirements.
  • Engage in design-for-manufacturing outreach with supply chain and manufacturing teams to ensure weld designs are suitable for high-volume battery production.
  • Identify mechanisms of weld failure in collaboration with the reliability engineering team and propose design mitigations to improve seal reliability.

Requirements

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field; Bachelor's with 5+ years or Master's with 3+ years of industry experience.
  • Experience designing welded plastic joints for implementation in high-volume production assemblies.
  • Working knowledge of chemical and reliability failure modes associated with various plastic welding technologies.
  • Excellent communication skills across a range of engineering and business functions.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced startup environment.
