The Senior Mechanical Engineer position at the Department of Homeland Security involves leading engineering efforts for auxiliary machinery systems on Coast Guard vessels. The role focuses on upgrading and overhauling existing systems, reviewing new construction deliverables, and managing complex projects in collaboration with other engineers. The position requires a strong background in mechanical engineering and the ability to solve complex engineering challenges related to marine equipment and systems.

Responsibilities

  • Lead engineering efforts for auxiliary machinery equipment and systems.
  • Upgrade and overhaul existing USCG assets, including entire system replacements when necessary.
  • Review new construction deliverables such as diagrams, calculations, and 3D models.
  • Manage complex project duties in collaboration with project teams of marine engineers and naval architects.
  • Ensure proper resource allocation by various agency and contractor organizations.
  • Serve as a technical specialist and key information source for assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Maintain liaison with experts in related fields to stay updated on trends and innovations.
  • Perform independent studies and assessments to evaluate operational effectiveness and recommend improvements.
  • Review plans, specifications, and cost estimates for technical adequacy for auxiliary machinery.
  • Direct necessary changes and resolve controversial problems to ensure conformance to plans and specifications.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship or National status is required.
  • Must be registered or exempt from the Selective Service.
  • A one-year probationary period may be required.
  • Must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 level in the federal sector.
  • Professional engineering experience under the guidance of a professional engineer is required.
  • Experience in developing new criteria or policies for resolving complex engineering problems is necessary.
  • Knowledge of advanced concepts, principles, and practices of mechanical engineering is essential.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with marine propulsion systems and weight handling systems.
  • Familiarity with HVACR systems and water making systems.
  • Ability to apply new mechanical engineering developments to solve novel problems.
