About the position

We are seeking a full-time Senior Mechanical Engineer in our Tucson, AZ location. In this role, you will be responsible for providing advanced engineering skills and project planning for electromechanical solutions for Garmin's Sporting Dog products. The position requires a deep understanding of mechanical design and the ability to manage complex projects from conception to completion. You will be expected to lead explorations of new technologies and make estimates on moderately complex mechanical designs, including tooling, part cost, and design time. Your expertise will be crucial in specifying test plans, mocking up, and testing complex mechanical systems to validate and verify compliance with design requirements. As a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you will also manage basic trade-offs, determine risk mitigation plans, and provide technical input to product development plans and concept documents. You will be responsible for mentoring and providing guidance to less experienced Mechanical Engineers, helping them develop their skills in technologies, cost analysis, design techniques, and problem-solving processes. Your role will involve using sound problem-solving techniques to provide reliable solutions to a wide range of difficult problems and to offer process improvements and author new procedures. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in mechanical engineering, with a focus on injection molding, die casting, sheet metal stamping, and machining. You will need to demonstrate a thorough understanding of material requirements, performance, and limitations, as well as knowledge of industry and Garmin product qualification tests, including environmental tests. This position is integral to the success of our product development efforts and requires a passion for innovation and excellence in engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Complete complex mechanical designs as a Master CAD-user.
  • Specify test plans and validate complex mechanical systems to ensure compliance with design requirements.
  • Manage trade-offs and determine risk mitigation plans for project goals and objectives.
  • Provide technical input to product development plans and concept documents.
  • Lead explorations of new technologies and estimate costs and design time for mechanical designs.
  • Mentor less experienced Mechanical Engineers on technologies and design techniques.
  • Offer process improvements and author new procedures for engineering tasks.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or Aerospace Engineering.
  • Minimum of 5 years relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Excellent academic record with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and capability to use CAD software for complex mechanical designs.
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Outstanding academics with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.
  • Experience in electronic packaging design.
  • Background in the Consumer Electronics industry.
  • Advanced CAD skills in SolidWorks and/or Onshape.
  • Experience creating test plans and validating products throughout the design cycle.
  • Independent ownership of a design from concept to product launch.
  • A passion for outdoor activities.
