About the position

FuelCell Energy is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our team in Danbury, Connecticut. As a global leader in decarbonizing power and producing hydrogen through our proprietary fuel cell technology, we are committed to enabling a world powered by clean energy. This position plays a crucial role in the design and development of fuel cell components and systems, utilizing advanced mathematical models and engineering tools to ensure high-quality outcomes. The successful candidate will lead technical discussions, analyze designs, and advise on material selections, contributing to innovative solutions in the clean energy sector. In this role, you will be responsible for designing custom equipment and managing the fabrication process to meet project schedules. You will participate in design failure mode and effects analysis (dFMEA) and process failure mode and effects analysis (pFMEA) to identify and mitigate risks associated with design and assembly processes. Your expertise will be essential in reviewing engineering design documentation, ensuring compliance with safety practices, and preparing technical reports and presentations for stakeholders. As a mentor to junior engineers, you will assist in their training and development, fostering a collaborative team environment. This hybrid position allows for remote work up to two days per week, with minimal travel requirements of approximately 5% domestically and/or internationally. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in mechanical engineering, particularly in fuel cell technology, and demonstrate a commitment to innovation and excellence in engineering practices.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and utilize mathematical models to aid in design of fuel cell components and fuel-cell based systems.
  • Lead technical discussions and review meetings with interdisciplinary project teams using informative, concise slide presentations and dialogue.
  • Analyze designs utilizing a combination of engineering calculations, computer-aided engineering tools (FEA software such as Nastran or Ansys), and/or analyses of test data.
  • Advise selections for a range of materials including high temperature metal alloys, ceramics, and insulation.
  • Design custom equipment and manage the fabrication process to ensure delivery of high-quality equipment in accordance with the project schedule.
  • Participate in dFMEA and pFMEA activities to ensure design and assembly process risks are identified and mitigated to acceptable levels.
  • Review engineering design documentation including P&ID's, technical reports, mechanical fabrication drawings, vendor supplied specifications, and design review slide decks.
  • Ensure that systems are developed in accordance with best safety practices, including participating in Hazard and Operability Analysis (HAZOP) reviews as needed.
  • Prepare technical reports and presentations to communicate designs/results to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Act as a mentor toward junior engineers and assist in training and team building.

Requirements

  • Must possess at least a master's degree or its equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or related field and at least 5 years of experience as a Mechanical Engineer or in a related role.
  • Alternatively, a bachelor's degree or its equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or related field and at least 7 years of progressive experience as a Mechanical Engineer or a related role would be acceptable.
  • At least 3 years of experience with ANSYS Fluent CFD software.
  • At least 2 years of experience with fuel cell stack interface hardware.
  • At least 2 years of experience carrying out mechanical engineering duties such as conceptual design, computational fluid dynamics analysis, creating drawings specifications, laboratory component testing, vendor fabrication quoting, and materials selection.
  • At least 2 years of experience with Autodesk Inventor CAD software and Autodesk Vault file management software.
  • At least 1 year of experience with bolt torque calculations for bolted joints including those with gasketed interfaces.
