About the position

Largo Clean Energy (LCE), a subsidiary of Largo Inc., is seeking an innovative, enthusiastic, and dedicated individual to join our organization as the Senior Modeling Engineer on a full-time capacity. LCE is headquartered in Wilmington, MA and is working to become a leader in long-duration energy storage. The company's VCHARGE battery system uses patented battery technology and proprietary vanadium electrolyte processing to provide customers with safe, efficient, low-cost, and long-lasting energy storage. The Senior Modeling Engineer will be a critical part of the Product Development Team supporting innovative battery technology development. This role will utilize models to assist in product and process development and will interface with many different teams within the company. Modeling subjects may include cell or system performance and characterization; electrochemical processes; cell or system calendar life; cost modeling; and technoeconomic assessments of total systems, manufacturing processes, or individual components. This role will touch all levels of the product, from cell to system, and will be an integral part of many teams. Excellent communication is required to clearly inform team members of conclusions from modeling activities. This role will primarily focus on modeling, however there may be some opportunity for hands-on work to support model verification with experimental data.

Responsibilities

  • Model battery systems and components in various ways
  • Perform Techno-Economic Assessments (TEAs) to help guide company strategy
  • Perform cost analysis and modeling of various cell, battery, and system components
  • Perform performance analysis and modeling of various cell, battery, and system components
  • Work closely with program managers and design engineers to define parameters and scope of models
  • Analyze operational cell and battery data
  • Opportunity for a hybrid work arrangement, expected to be on-site in Wilmington, MA at least 2-3 days per week.

Requirements

  • BS, Master's or PhD in Chemical, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or Mathematics discipline or equivalent
  • BS and 5 to 10 years of experience in a similar role OR MS and 3 to 8 years of experience in a similar role OR PhD and 0 to 5 years of experience in a similar role
  • Familiarity with electrochemical systems, heat and mass transfer, thermodynamics, kinetics, chemistry, and chemical processes
  • Experience with Matlab, Simscape, Microsoft Excel, or other modeling software
  • Flexibility to work in a dynamic startup business
  • Strong MS Office Skills

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with grid scale energy storage devices, batteries, chemical processing, and industry is a plus
