About the position

The Senior Network Engineer position at North Shore Community College is a critical role within the Information Systems department, responsible for the design, implementation, and maintenance of the college's network infrastructure. This includes local area networks (LANs), Storage Area Networks (SAN), wide area networks (WANs and SDWAN), and wireless networks. The successful candidate will report directly to the Executive Director of Network Infrastructure, User and Media Services, and will be expected to respond to network emergencies, serving as the escalation point for network-related issues, including those that occur outside of normal business hours. The role requires a deep understanding of networking technologies and current security trends, along with excellent problem-solving skills. The ideal candidate will be proactive, detail-oriented, and passionate about ensuring the scalability, performance, stability, and security of the network environment. Responsibilities include managing backup software, configuring and upgrading network devices, and providing supervision for larger scale projects that require field technicians' involvement. The Senior Network Engineer will also monitor network performance, troubleshoot issues, and implement security measures to protect against unauthorized access and data breaches. In addition to technical skills, the position demands strong communication and interpersonal skills, as collaboration with various IT teams is essential for integrating network infrastructure with other systems and applications. Documentation of network configurations and procedures is also a key responsibility, ensuring that troubleshooting steps are available for reference and training purposes. The role may require occasional travel to the Lynn campus and the ability to work outside of normal business hours for maintenance or emergency responses.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and maintain the organization's network infrastructure, including LANs, SAN, WANs, and wireless networks.
  • Respond to network emergencies and serve as the escalation point for network-related issues outside of normal business hours.
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest networking technologies and best practices, making recommendations for network improvements.
  • Manage backup software (VEAAM), redundant backup devices, and the Virtual Server environment (VMware).
  • Work with IT and the college community to ensure disaster recovery is included in all designs or improvements.
  • Manage relationships with primary network vendors to obtain the best costs for solutions.
  • Configure, manage, and upgrade network devices such as routers, switches, firewalls, and load balancers.
  • Provide network architecture, security leadership, and direction for managing endpoint switches and wireless infrastructure.
  • Supervise larger scale projects that require field technicians' involvement.
  • Monitor network performance and troubleshoot issues to ensure optimal uptime and performance.
  • Oversee and configure the server and network monitoring & alert system (What's Up Gold).
  • Provide support for Active Directory and Windows server farm.
  • Implement and maintain network security measures including firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and VPNs.
  • Support highly segmented networks and zero trust concepts.
  • Conduct regular security and inventory audits and implement security best practices.
  • Collaborate with various IT teams to integrate network infrastructure with other systems and applications.
  • Document network configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting steps for reference and training purposes.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to end-users and other IT staff as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field with at least 5 years of experience, or an equivalent combination of certifications and relevant job-related experience.
  • Proven experience as a network administrator or similar role.
  • Strong knowledge of networking protocols and technologies, including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, NAT, VLANs, and IP sub-netting.
  • Experience with network hardware and software from vendors such as Cisco/Meraki and Next Generation Firewalls (Fortinet preferred).
  • Hands-on experience with network monitoring and troubleshooting tools.
  • Familiarity with network security concepts and best practices.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., CCNA, CCNP, CompTIA Network+) are a plus.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with cloud networking solutions.
  • Knowledge of VoIP technologies and implementations.
  • Familiarity with scripting languages for automation (e.g., Python, PowerShell).
