About the position

The Networks team at Hudson River Trading (HRT) is responsible for designing, building, and maintaining the communications infrastructure that supports our high-capacity, low-latency trading and data research environments, which operate 24/7 across more than 25 countries and 100 locations. We are seeking a Senior Network Engineer with extensive experience in managing and designing large-scale environments to meet the high-performance and availability demands of a leading algorithmic trading firm in the global financial markets. This role requires a combination of project management and deep technical expertise, allowing you to work alongside some of the brightest minds in the industry. In this position, you will be responsible for a wide range of tasks, from product selection and network design to routing configuration and troubleshooting. You will collaborate closely with our Systems and Trading Operations teams, as well as other departments within HRT, to build, manage, and monitor our low-latency trading network. Your responsibilities will be broad, providing you with the freedom to analyze and solve complex problems, with your solutions having an immediate impact on our global operations. You will engage in various projects aimed at enhancing the performance and capacity of our global trading and research platforms, contributing to both high-level strategic planning and the technical intricacies of our network architecture. This role is pivotal in ensuring that our trading infrastructure remains robust and efficient, enabling us to maintain our competitive edge in the fast-paced world of algorithmic trading.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain the communications infrastructure for low-latency trading and data research environments.
  • Manage and configure routing protocols and network devices to ensure high performance and availability.
  • Collaborate with Systems and Trading Operations teams to monitor and optimize the low-latency trading network.
  • Analyze and solve complex networking problems, providing immediate solutions that impact global operations.
  • Engage in capacity planning and lifecycle project management for enterprise networks.
  • Create and maintain effective technical documentation for network configurations and troubleshooting processes.
  • Utilize packet decoding and analysis tools to diagnose and resolve networking issues.
  • Work on projects to enhance the performance and capacity of global trading and research platforms.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related IT field.
  • 5-10 years of relevant experience in low-latency and high-frequency trading environments.
  • In-depth understanding of common layer 2 and layer 3 network protocols and best practices, including OSPF, BGP, PIM, and IGMP.
  • Experience managing Arista, Cisco, and other common networking devices on a daily basis.
  • Familiarity with low-latency microwave networks and/or optical transmission systems such as Adva and Ciena is desirable.
  • Experience in designing enterprise networks and full lifecycle project management.
  • Proficiency with packet decoding and analysis tools such as tcpdump and Wireshark.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to distill complex issues into clear terms.
  • Experience with Unix/Linux command line utilities and networking stack.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills for a wide range of networking issues, including ethernet LAN problems and global WAN.
  • Understanding of basic power consumption and cooling issues in a datacenter environment.
  • Knowledge of fiber optics technology and cabling standards, with the ability to make recommendations on purchases.
  • Willingness to solve small technical problems in the field independently.
  • Excellent collaboration skills and a willingness to admit mistakes.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with firewalls including Cisco, Palo Alto, and Fortinet.
  • Experience with VPNs and NAT configurations.
  • Familiarity with configuration management tools such as Ansible or Salt.
  • Knowledge of Python, Prometheus, Grafana, ELK, and GitHub is desirable.
  • Familiarity with public cloud networks such as AWS, GCP, and Azure.

Benefits

  • Annual base salary range of $150,000 to $250,000, depending on skills and experience.
  • Sign-on and discretionary performance bonuses may be provided as part of the total compensation package.
