About the position

Leidos Health Mission Solutions is seeking a Senior Network Engineer specializing in network operations, contingent on contract award, for a large network services opportunity supporting the National Institute of Health (NIH) in the Bethesda, MD area. The candidate must be local to the DC Metro area for onsite work and must be a US Citizen or US Person with the ability to obtain a Public Trust Clearance level 5, which requires candidates to have been in the United States for the current three consecutive years. The Senior Network Engineer will be a vital member of an operations team responsible for maintaining and supporting a large-scale enterprise network primarily based on Cisco technology. This network operations team ensures a secure and highly available network backbone, wireless, and data center services in accordance with existing customer service level agreements (SLAs). The selected candidate will provide technical leadership and mentoring to junior staff, direct Tier 3 support for incident response, perform problem management and incident prevention activities, and coordinate with vendors and service providers. In this role, the engineer will maintain virtual local area networks (VLANs), wide area networks (WANs), data center networks, wireless networks, and industrial control communications systems in accordance with SLAs. They will provide Cisco switching and routing expertise in support of NIH data center networks and applications, evaluate the potential impacts of new network solutions on the NIH and Trusted Internet Connection (TIC) networks, and configure and optimize network monitoring tools to provide high-fidelity alerts and visualizations. The engineer will also measure, monitor, and plan network performance, usage, availability, capacity, and risks for network change requests, while providing strategic and tactical direction for NIH CIT Network Services enhancements and projects.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain virtual local area networks (VLANs), wide area networks (WANs), data center networks, wireless networks, and industrial control communications systems in accordance with SLAs.
  • Provide Cisco switching and routing expertise in support of NIH data center networks and applications.
  • Evaluate the potential impacts of new network solutions on the NIH and Trusted Internet Connection (TIC) networks and how those solutions will transition into operations.
  • Configure and optimize network monitoring tools including ScienceLogic SL1 to provide high-fidelity alerts and visualizations to the network monitoring team.
  • Measure, monitor, and plan network performance, usage, availability, capacity, and risks for network change requests.
  • Provide strategic and tactical direction for NIH CIT Network Services enhancements and projects.
  • Provide Tier 3 technical support, development of standard operation procedures, and mentoring to the operations team.
  • Collaborate with the program architecture and security teams to ensure policy and security compliance for change requests and new capabilities.
  • Support the customer for transition from traditional to software-defined enterprise networking.

Requirements

  • Active Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) Routing and Switching certification with five (5) years of data center operational experience OR an active Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) certification plus ten (10) years of data center operational experience.
  • Deep understanding of Layer 2 and Layer 3 frameworks and protocols.
  • Knowledge of supporting formal change management processes using an ITSM management platform such as ServiceNow.
  • Experience supporting complex enterprise VLAN architectures and applying Zero Trust principles.
  • Knowledge of IT service management best practices for supporting network operations for large volumes (45,000) of end users.
  • Experience designing and implementing data center networks using Cisco Nexus switches, F5 appliances, and Palo Alto devices.
  • Experience with scripting languages and automation using infrastructure as code.
  • Demonstrated ability for oral and written communication with the highest levels of management and delivery of required reports in accordance with formal contractual agreements.
  • Experience providing operations support for large enterprise network backbones.
  • Experience supporting large wireless networks and industrial control system networks that include environmental monitoring and management of uninterruptible power supplies.
