About the position

The Senior Network Engineer, WAN/Wired will lead the design, implementation, and maintenance of the university's wide area network (WAN) and wired network infrastructure. This role is critical in ensuring that the network solutions support the university's research and academic initiatives, as well as its administrative and operational needs. The Senior Network Engineer will be responsible for leading the resolution of complex technical issues in a timely manner while delivering best-in-class WAN/wired service support across campus. This position will have a significant impact on UCLA's operations and culture by ensuring that the IT infrastructure is operable, secure, efficient, and effective in service of the university's academic mission. The individual in this role will be expected to advance the University's mission by delivering exceptional information technology services comprehensively and consistently across faculty, staff, and students. This role will execute UCLA's vision while modeling UCLA's culture and values.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, implementation, and maintenance of the university's WAN and wired network infrastructure.
  • Resolve complex technical issues in a timely manner while delivering WAN/wired service support across campus.
  • Ensure UCLA's IT infrastructure is operable, secure, efficient, and effective in service of the university's academic mission.
  • Deliver exceptional information technology services across faculty, staff, and students.
  • Model UCLA's culture and values while executing the university's vision.

Requirements

  • Five years experience in network services, information technology, or network operations, or a related field.
  • Significant experience in designing, implementing, and supporting large-scale, complex network environments, preferably in a university environment.
  • Significant experience with network equipment from major vendors such as Cisco, Juniper, and Palo Alto Networks.
  • Advanced technical skills in WAN and wired network design, configuration, and troubleshooting.
  • Advanced knowledge of monitoring and automation tools to ensure quick resolution of issues.
  • Expert knowledge of IP routing protocols such as BGP, OSPF, ISIS, and EIGRP and network technologies such as Ethernet, TCP/IP, MPLS, SD-WAN, VPN, VLAN, and STP.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, able to communicate complex technical ideas to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to establish and advance positive working relationships with a diverse community of colleagues.
  • Advanced organizational skills and ability to balance priorities and deliver concurrent projects.
  • Advanced problem-solving skills; ability to identify root problems and scope solutions based on knowledge of resources, timelines, vision, and strategy.
  • Ability to participate in activities to advance an inclusive environment that values equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging.
  • Creative thinking and ability to introduce innovations such as new technologies or processes.

Nice-to-haves

  • Seven or more years experience in network services, information technology, or network operations.
  • Experience in complex higher education environments, serving academic and administrative functions of a large public university.
  • Experience managing system configuration with tools such as Puppet, Chef, Ansible, etc.
  • Cisco Certified Network Professional certification (CCNP) or Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) certifications.
  • CompTIA Network+ Certification or Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA).
