About the position

The Senior Network Engineer, Wireless/Radio will manage the design, implementation, optimization, administration, and technical documentation of all wireless services and radio systems. This role is critical in leading the resolution of complex technical issues in a timely manner while delivering best-in-class wireless/radio service support across the UCLA campus. The Senior Wireless/Radio Network Engineer will oversee day-to-day network engineering and technical support for wireless network infrastructure, ensuring that systems operate at peak efficiency with minimal downtime. In addition to technical responsibilities, the Senior Network Engineer will ensure that all networking activities align with industry best practices as well as the policies, processes, and procedures of Information Technology Services (ITS) and the university. This position will also provide technical and training assistance to other ITS teams, positively impacting UCLA's operations and culture by ensuring that the IT infrastructure is operable, secure, efficient, and effective in support of the university's academic mission. The role is designed to advance the University's mission by delivering exceptional information technology services comprehensively and consistently across faculty, staff, and students, while modeling UCLA's culture and values.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the design and implementation of wireless services and radio systems.
  • Lead the resolution of complex technical issues related to wireless/radio services.
  • Provide day-to-day network engineering and technical support for wireless network infrastructure.
  • Ensure systems are operating at peak efficiency with minimal downtime.
  • Align networking activities with industry best practices and university policies.
  • Provide technical and training assistance to other ITS teams.
  • Deliver exceptional information technology services across the university.

Requirements

  • Five years of experience in network services, information technology, or network operations.
  • Significant experience in information technology, network engineering, or wireless networks.
  • Experience troubleshooting wireless networks, including client experience testing and wireless packet analysis.
  • Experience with 802.11 standards, RF design and engineering, and managing radio systems.
  • Experience designing controller clustering, failover methods, and AP modes of operation.
  • Experience with wireless optimizations, including AP placement and channel tuning.
  • Advanced knowledge of LAN/WAN and network protocols.
  • Expert knowledge of various radio equipment types and communication systems.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to convey complex technical ideas.
  • Ability to establish positive working relationships with a diverse community.
  • Advanced organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects.
  • Advanced problem-solving skills and ability to identify root problems.
  • Commitment to advancing an inclusive environment that values equity and diversity.

Nice-to-haves

  • Seven or more years of experience in network services or related fields.
  • Experience in complex higher education environments.
  • Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) or Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) certifications.
  • CompTIA Network+ Certification or Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certification.
