About the position

The Senior Network Engineer at Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining the laboratory's network infrastructure. This role involves working on both existing and next-generation wired and wireless networks, ensuring high availability and performance of networking systems, and collaborating on new technology offerings while enhancing cybersecurity measures. The position offers a unique opportunity to build a new network architecture from the ground up, contributing to PPPL's mission in fusion energy and other scientific fields.

Responsibilities

  • Design and upgrade existing network architecture.
  • Maintain computer networks, hardware, software, and related systems.
  • Facilitate remote user access to system resources.
  • Ensure timely delivery of critical data and replace faulty network hardware components.
  • Provide network engineering support for infrastructure and customer-facing applications.
  • Support PPPL projects and initiatives with network engineering requirements.
  • Troubleshoot wired and wireless network issues using available tools.
  • Assume overall responsibility for remote access VPN systems.
  • Provide primary network support for voice over IP (VOIP) telecommunications systems.
  • Evaluate new technologies and offerings and complete proof of concept testing.
  • Update internal and external documentation including network diagrams and procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a computer-related field or equivalent training and work experience.
  • 5-10 years of experience in a Network Engineer role or related IT support role.
  • Hands-on prior network engineering experience in the field.
  • Experience in wireless standards, protocols, and equipment.
  • Demonstrable experience with basic routing/switching technologies, wireless, VoIP, VPN, SNMP management, and data mirroring.
  • Hands-on experience with configuration of border gateway routing protocol (BGP).
  • Experience with Palo Alto Global Protect VPNs or other VPN types.
  • Background with Linux scripting, IT automation tools, DNS/DHCP management, and migration to IPv6 is a plus.
  • Strong communication and writing skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with specialized wireless technologies, including 802.1x authentication and rogue detection.
  • Knowledge of dynamic routing protocols and migration from layer 2 to layer 3 routing.
  • Experience with SIP trunking and redundancy testing.
