About the position

The Senior Network Systems Engineer for Science and Research at Emory University plays a critical role in designing, implementing, and maintaining the research network systems and infrastructure. This position requires a blend of technical expertise, leadership, and collaboration with various stakeholders to ensure the network meets the evolving needs of the research community. The engineer will also mentor less-experienced engineers and manage complex projects related to network services.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in the design, planning, implementation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of research network systems.
  • Performs troubleshooting, testing, scripting, and coding, while mentoring less-experienced engineers.
  • Designs, plans, tests, installs, and maintains complex research infrastructure including network, storage, and security systems.
  • Administers and oversees the Science DMZ and high-performance research network infrastructure.
  • Tests new designs and communications protocols in the lab.
  • Collaborates with team members to evaluate advanced troubleshooting methodologies.
  • Provides training and technical assistance to end-users.
  • Researches and modifies custom network services monitoring applications.
  • Participates in the administration and troubleshooting of core research network services.
  • Tracks multiple advanced systems to maintain a network engineered for science and research applications.
  • Stays updated with IT concepts and technologies to improve user experience.
  • Manages science and research infrastructure projects and provides technical leadership.
  • Performs inspections of network protocols and resolves production issues.
  • Interacts with researchers and IT peers to assist with network service adoption and optimization.
  • Creates and utilizes documentation systems for network services resources.
  • Works with vendors to understand new product capabilities and condense information for internal use.
  • Collaborates with IT partners in troubleshooting infrastructure problems.
  • Articulates problems and proposed solutions to ensure resilience and security of network services.
  • Analyzes application system trends to design network architecture for improvements.
  • Monitors new standards and networking technologies for science and research.
  • Implements and monitors policies and procedures within assigned areas.
  • Plans and recommends changes to technology infrastructure.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Math, Engineering or related field and 7 years of relevant IT experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid Georgia driver's license and insurable driving record.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in an academic, research, or scientific institution.
  • Strong working knowledge of Linux administration.
  • Experience with scripting in Python and Bash.
  • Knowledge of Slurm, Globus, ESNET Science DMZ, and parallel file systems.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to foster positive relationships with faculty, staff, and students.
