About the position

The Senior Nurse Intern at Orlando Health Orlando Regional Medical Center (ORMC) is a pivotal role designed for nursing students who are nearing the completion of their nursing program. This position is situated within the Progressive Care Unit (PCU), which specializes in the care of patients whose conditions are complex but not critical enough for intensive care. The PCU is a 50+ bed unit that provides an ideal environment for both new and experienced nurses to develop their skills and build a strong foundation in patient care. The patient population includes individuals with a variety of conditions such as COPD, heart failure, DKA, sepsis, respiratory failure, kidney disease, and stroke, among others. As a Senior Nurse Intern, you will perform general patient care tasks, including hygiene, mobility assistance, nutrition support, and continuous observation, all under the guidance and mentorship of a Registered Nurse. The role emphasizes a collaborative approach to patient care, involving a multi-disciplinary team that includes nursing assistants, charge nurses, physicians, case managers, and various therapy professionals. This teamwork is essential to ensure optimal patient outcomes and safety. Responsibilities

  • Provides routine treatments and interventions consistent with the educational level and skills learned in the academic environment and demonstrated competency through Orlando Health.
  • Performs advanced skills after achieving demonstrated competencies such as nasogastric tube irrigation, suctioning, and removal; wound irrigation; complex dressing change; maintenance of enteral tube feeding; and tracheostomy care.
  • Performs increased or continuous visual observation for Baker Act, behavioral health, and suicide risk patients as assigned.
  • Assists patients with hygiene, mobility, and nutritional needs.
  • Maintains safety and security of patients, families, self, and other members of the healthcare team.
  • Ensures patient privacy, rights, and confidentiality.
  • Follows standard precautions and adheres to Hand Hygiene and PPE procedures.
  • Communicates appropriate information regarding the patient's condition to the registered nurse (RN) and other members of the healthcare team.
  • Participates in handoff report and conducts purposeful hourly rounding on patients.
  • Documents information according to Orlando Health specific policies and guidelines.
  • Transports and assists patients through the admission and discharge process.
  • Maintains a safe and clean environment.
  • Provides exceptional service and care to all patients, families, customers, and team members.
  • Transports and delivers items, equipment, blood products, and medications throughout the facility.
  • Receives and processes incoming calls, patient calls, and guest requests.

Requirements

  • Enrolled in an Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Program and preparing to enter the final two semesters or quarter of the applicable nursing program.
  • Completed Senior Nurse Intern competencies.
  • Maintains current BLS/Healthcare provider certification.
