About the position

As a Senior Oracle Database Administrator at H.E.B., you will play a critical role in designing, developing, implementing, and maintaining database applications that support our business operations. With a focus on Oracle databases, particularly those hosted on Oracle Exadata machines, you will leverage your extensive experience to ensure high availability and performance of our database systems. Your responsibilities will include setting up and configuring Oracle databases with high availability configurations such as Oracle ASM, Oracle RAC, and Oracle Data Guard. You will also be tasked with monitoring database performance, managing backup jobs, and performing database refresh tasks to ensure data integrity and availability across production and non-production environments. In this role, you will actively participate in on-call DBA support rotations, providing after-hours support for production databases as needed. You will assist application development teams during production deployments and contribute to fine-tuning application programs that rely on database performance. Your expertise will be essential in conducting root cause analysis of production database issues and developing long-term solutions to prevent future occurrences. You will also be responsible for following IT change management processes and upgrading Oracle database software while minimizing downtime for applications. Collaboration is key in this position, as you will work closely with cross-functional teams, including IT Infrastructure, Information Security, Network, and Storage, to articulate and fulfill Oracle database requirements. Your proactive approach will be crucial in prioritizing and resolving database security vulnerabilities in a timely manner, ensuring the integrity and security of our data assets.

Responsibilities

  • Setup and configure Oracle databases with high availability configurations such as Oracle ASM, Oracle RAC and Oracle Data Guard.
  • Setup and monitor database backup jobs and work on PROD to NON-PROD database refresh tasks.
  • Monitor database alert notifications, transaction volumes, server and database space utilization, backup jobs and take timely/preventive action before production issues are caused.
  • Participate in on-CALL DBA support rotation and provide after-hours DBA support for production databases during weekends or late nights when required.
  • Assist in fine-tuning application programs / processes that depend on databases.
  • Support application development teams in their production deployments.
  • Assist with root cause analysis (RCA) of production database issues and work towards long-term solutions.
  • Participate in developing standards for data access and database administration.
  • Follow IT change management processes set in H-E-B.
  • Upgrade and patch Oracle database software using high availability configurations such as Oracle RAC and Oracle Data Guard etc. with minimal downtime to applications.
  • Work with Oracle Support for system issues that require product support.
  • Log service requests and follow up for resolution of critical issues in a timely fashion.
  • Work with cross-functional team members belonging to IT Infrastructure, Information Security, Network, Storage etc. in articulating and convincing Oracle database requirements.
  • Prioritize resolving database and database server related security vulnerability findings in a timely fashion.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of work experience as an Oracle Database Administrator (Oracle DBA).
  • At least 2 years of experience on Oracle databases hosted on Oracle Exadata machines.
  • Strong experience in Oracle RAC, Data Guard and ASM (Automatic Storage Management).
  • Database administration, support, and management of Redis, Couchbase and Neo4j databases.
  • Database administration experience in at least one of the following: PostgreSQL, Informix, MS SQL Server, MySQL, or DB2.
  • Hands-on experience with version control systems such as Gitlab.com and Atlassian Bitbucket server.
  • Experience in patching Oracle Exadata hardware components such as InfiniBand switches, Storage cells and Oracle Linux operating system machines.
  • Prior work experience in integrating Oracle database users with Active Directory.
