About the position

The Senior Payroll Specialist at Smith College plays a crucial role in the payroll team, participating in all aspects of the bi-weekly payroll process. This position involves monitoring time submissions, validating data, processing payroll, and providing support to the Smith community by answering questions and training employees. Responsibilities

  • Monitor weekly time submissions and validate data for payroll processing.
  • Process bi-weekly payroll for the Smith community.
  • Respond to payroll-related questions and explain procedures to employees.
  • Train employees on payroll processes and systems.
  • Supervise student workers within the payroll team.
  • Contribute to the configuration and ongoing maintenance of the Workday system.
  • Support efforts to create a respectful and inclusive work environment.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree plus three to five years of relevant payroll experience.
  • Knowledge of accounting, general ledger, IRS guidelines, and withholding information.
  • Experience working with diverse backgrounds.

Nice-to-haves

  • Advanced degree and/or payroll certification(s).
  • Experience with Workday and a union workforce.
  • Experience with payments to foreign persons and tax treaty assessment.
  • Experience with payroll amendments and financial accounting.
