About the position

The Orange County Department of Education (OCDE) is seeking a Senior Payroll Technician to join its Business Services Division. This role is critical in ensuring the accurate and timely processing of payroll for various school districts within Orange County. The Senior Payroll Technician will be responsible for performing specialized payroll duties, which include payroll reporting and record maintenance for school districts, ensuring compliance with all applicable legal requirements. The selected candidate will work independently, utilizing knowledge of multiple automated systems and databases to carry out job assignments without close supervision. In this position, the Senior Payroll Technician will collaborate closely with staff from various school districts to resolve payroll challenges. This includes interpreting payroll and district policies, providing information to assist management and employees, and delivering exceptional customer service. The technician will evaluate and research payroll discrepancies, prepare and generate necessary federal, Social Security, and Medicare tax deposits, and reconcile quarterly returns for federal and state agencies. The role requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and a commitment to maintaining accurate payroll records. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in payroll processing and a thorough understanding of payroll regulations. They will be expected to communicate effectively with a variety of stakeholders, including OCDE staff, banks, federal agencies, attorneys, and collection agencies, to ensure smooth payroll operations. This position plays a vital role in supporting the overall mission of OCDE to provide essential services to the educational community in Orange County.

Responsibilities

  • Perform specialized payroll duties involving payroll reporting and records for school districts.
  • Ensure accurate and timely preparation, administration, auditing, and maintenance of payroll functions in compliance with legal requirements.
  • Work independently using knowledge of multiple automated systems and databases.
  • Collaborate with staff from various school districts to resolve payroll challenges.
  • Interpret payroll and district policies and procedures to assist management and employees.
  • Provide customer service and assist employees/sites/districts with payroll resolution.
  • Evaluate and research payroll discrepancies and prepare necessary tax deposits.
  • Prepare and reconcile quarterly returns for federal and state agencies.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in bookkeeping, accounting, or a related field.
  • Five years of experience in timekeeping, payroll duties, and functions.
