About the position

The Senior Payroll Technician at San Mateo County Community College District is responsible for performing complex accounting clerical work related to auditing, processing, and maintaining employee payroll and related employment records. This role requires independent judgment to coordinate office procedures and adhere to strict timelines for monthly payroll processing. The technician will interact extensively with college and district staff, faculty, and regulatory agencies, ensuring accurate payroll data management and compliance with relevant laws and policies.

Responsibilities

  • Exchanges information with college staff regarding payroll matters.
  • Collects, audits, and verifies accuracy of source documents related to employee files and compensation.
  • Processes wage garnishments, dues, benefit programs, and paycheck cancellations as necessary.
  • Audits, corrects, and maintains accurate payroll data for tax preparation and reporting.
  • Sets up and maintains employee payroll records in accordance with retention requirements.
  • Posts statistical data and revisions of journals and ledgers.
  • Provides information to auditors as requested.
  • Compiles payroll and related source documents for reports.
  • Operates office equipment including computers and calculators.
  • Uses a database for payroll processing and report generation.
  • Researches labor laws and regulations governing payroll.
  • Assists in developing schedules for payroll processing and reports.
  • Serves on District committees and attends meetings as requested.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree or equivalent in business administration, accounting, or a related field.
  • Successful experience in large and complex payroll or related accounting clerical work.
  • Demonstrated cultural competence and sensitivity to diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience with organization and maintenance of electronic and manual files.
  • Experience with computer data entry and retrieval.
  • Skill in using spreadsheet and other software for data compilation and report preparation.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize workloads, and work independently.
  • Skill in customer service and teamwork.

  • Experience with automated payroll systems.
  • Knowledge of general accounting principles and fund accounting.
