About the position

We are seeking a full-time Senior Pilot Experience Product Designer in our Olathe, KS location. In this role, you will be responsible for understanding fundamental usability and user-centered design principles to guide software user interface development for aviation products, including integrated flight decks and state-of-the-art cockpit designs. As a Senior Pilot Experience Product Designer, you will play a crucial role in enhancing the user experience for pilots by creating intuitive and effective designs that meet the needs of aviation professionals. In this position, you may perform as a design lead who guides design direction for a small project or sub-project. You will conduct user interviews and observational research, interpreting research data to create viable solutions. Your responsibilities will include creating interactive prototypes and conducting user tests to improve and validate designs. You will take ownership of key features in a product line and remain current on user research methods, conducting effective research to generate and improve designs. Collaboration is key in this role, as you will work with partners and potential partners to define the user experience. Staying abreast of new prototyping, presentation, or computer graphics techniques and software is essential. You will demonstrate full use of design standards and procedures, showcasing a sense of urgency, commitment, and focus on the right priorities in developing solutions in a timely fashion. Presenting design ideas to various disciplines or customers will be part of your responsibilities, and you will independently produce solid design solutions while providing reliable solutions to a variety of problems. Additionally, you will serve as a mentor to less experienced User Experience Designers, helping to foster their growth and development in the field.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Interactive Design, Human Factors, Visual Design, or a degree with an equivalent curriculum that teaches user-centered design principles AND a minimum of 1 year relevant work experience OR a minimum of 5 years equivalent combination of education and relevant experience performing the essential functions of the Garmin Product Designer role.
  • Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule).
  • Proficiency and knowledge using a variety of design tools.
  • Excellent presentation, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrates understanding and knowledge of good user interface design (consistency, simplicity, usability).

Nice-to-haves

  • Outstanding academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.5).
  • Experience in graphics production, graphics editing technology, motion graphics, interactive design works, and/or videography.
  • Software skills using Figma, Blender, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and/or After Effects.
  • Pilot Certificate (Private Pilot license, Instrument rating, etc.).
