About the position

As a Senior Pilot Experience Product Designer at Garmin, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the user experience for our aviation products. This position may involve acting as a design lead, guiding the design direction for small projects or sub-projects. You will be responsible for conducting user interviews and observational research, interpreting the data to create viable design solutions that enhance the user experience. Your expertise will be crucial in creating interactive prototypes and conducting user tests to validate and improve designs, ensuring that our products meet the highest standards of usability and functionality. In this role, you will take ownership of key features within a product line, remaining current on user research methods and employing effective research techniques to generate and refine designs. Collaboration is key, as you will work closely with partners and potential partners to define the user experience, ensuring that all stakeholders are aligned with the design vision. Staying abreast of new prototyping, presentation, and computer graphics techniques and software will be essential to your success. You will demonstrate a strong commitment to design standards and procedures, showcasing a sense of urgency and focus on the right priorities to develop timely solutions. Presenting design ideas to various disciplines or customers will be a regular part of your responsibilities, and you will independently produce solid design solutions while providing reliable answers to a variety of design challenges. Additionally, you will serve as a mentor to less experienced User Experience Designers, fostering their growth and development within the team.

Responsibilities

  • Guide design direction for small projects or sub-projects as a design lead.
  • Conduct user interviews and observational research to interpret data for viable design solutions.
  • Create interactive prototypes and conduct user tests to validate and improve designs.
  • Take ownership of key features in a product line.
  • Stay current on user research methods and conduct effective research for design improvement.
  • Collaborate with partners to define the user experience.
  • Stay updated on new prototyping, presentation, and computer graphics techniques and software.
  • Demonstrate full use of design standards and procedures.
  • Present design ideas to various disciplines or customers.
  • Independently produce solid design solutions and provide reliable solutions to design problems.
  • Mentor less experienced User Experience Designers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Interactive Design, Human Factors, Visual Design, or equivalent curriculum teaching user-centered design principles.
  • Minimum of 1 year relevant work experience or 5 years equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Excellent academic record with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Proficiency in a variety of design tools.
  • Excellent presentation, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Understanding of good user interface design principles such as consistency, simplicity, and usability.

Nice-to-haves

  • Outstanding academic record with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.
  • Experience in graphics production, editing technology, motion graphics, interactive design, and/or videography.
  • Software skills in Figma, Blender, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and/or After Effects.
  • Possession of a Pilot Certificate (Private Pilot license, Instrument rating, etc.).
