About the position

The Senior On-Call Preservation Architect at ICF is responsible for employing technical knowledge of architectural design and historical research to preserve and rehabilitate historic buildings. This role involves assessing the condition of historic structures, reviewing and developing plans for repairs and renovations, and providing oversight during construction to ensure compliance with preservation standards. The position requires collaboration with various stakeholders, including architectural historians and client design teams, primarily focusing on projects in the Los Angeles area and across California.

Responsibilities

  • Understand project scopes and architectural plans and develop approaches commensurate with project budgets.
  • Research materials, construction techniques, and the historic context of historic buildings to determine appropriate treatments.
  • Assess and recommend applicability of California Historic Building Code.
  • Prepare, review, and comment on drawings and technical specifications.
  • Prepare conditions assessment reports, maintenance plans, and treatment plans.
  • Perform construction monitoring site visits and respond to RFIs.
  • Coordinate project reviews and schedules with clients, other consultants, and contractors/construction teams.
  • Keep track of project schedules and meeting deliverable deadlines.
  • Stay informed about the latest innovations in conservation materials and techniques.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Architecture or Architectural Design.
  • 6+ years of post-graduate preservation architect experience.
  • Ability to travel as required and must have a valid driver's license and successfully pass a Motor Vehicle Records (MVR) check.
  • Thorough knowledge of the SOI Standards, California Historic Building Code, historic construction techniques, and both historic and non-historic finishes.
  • Experience and familiarity with California history and architectural history; knowledge of other regions of the United States is a plus.
  • Experience with projects involving alterations to properties listed in or eligible for listing in local registers, the CRHR, or NRHP.
  • Experience working on preservation projects with specialty trades.
  • Proficiency with design software (i.e. REVIT, AutoCAD, etc.) and MS Office Suite.
  • Written communication skills, particularly demonstrated experience preparing reports involving historic buildings for regulatory compliance.
