About the position

The Senior Principal Cloud DevOps and Platform Engineer role at General Dynamics Mission Systems involves tackling complex platform engineering challenges with a focus on innovation and creativity. This position requires leading significant advancements in product features, serving as a subject matter expert in platform automation and architecture, and guiding engineering teams in evolving cloud technologies. The role also includes developing automation for PaaS deployments, interfacing with customers, and supporting the implementation of cloud solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Work on complex platform engineering problems requiring creativity and innovation.
  • Lead major feature advancements in products.
  • Become a subject matter expert in platform automation and architecture.
  • Conduct research spikes to integrate new capabilities into the platform.
  • Assist in breaking down work and contribute to roadmapping sessions.
  • Set technical objectives for the team.
  • Develop automation for creating and maintaining PaaS deployments.
  • Automatically configure and deploy PaaS infrastructure including identity and access management, network architecture, application security, and more.
  • Interface with internal and external customers to deploy solutions and deliver educational workshops.
  • Collaborate with the team to plan major updates and enhancements to products.
  • Guide engineering teams in evolving cloud technologies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Software Engineering or a related field, or a Master's degree plus 8 years of job-related experience.
  • 10+ years of job-related experience or 8 years with a Master's degree.
  • Ability to obtain a Department of Defense TS/SCI security clearance.
  • Experience with public (AWS, Azure), private (RHOSP, VIO), and mixed cloud environments.
  • Familiarity with container technologies such as Docker or Kubernetes.
  • Experience with CI/CD technologies like GitLab, Jenkins, Puppet, or Chef.
  • Experience maintaining production-grade applications in virtualized environments using automation.
  • Ability to create pipelines, Ansible Playbooks, and/or Terraform configurations.

Nice-to-haves

  • IT security practices including encryption, certificates, key management, and patch management.
  • Installation of IaaS technologies such as AWS, OpenStack, RHOSP, or VIO.
  • Management of cloud resources in AWS and/or Azure.
  • Experience with PaaS technologies such as Kubernetes, Rancher, or OpenShift.
  • Familiarity with cloud automation tooling like Ansible, Terraform, or Packer.
  • Experience with open source server, messaging, load balancing, and database software.
