The Energetics and Propulsion Department is an engineering organization in the Mechanical Engineering (ME) Directorate. This Department is responsible for the full spectrum of warhead, fuzing, and propulsion designs/technology, including power systems, ignition, and all other weapon initiation safety systems technology. The Senior Principal Engineer - Solid Propulsion position would be responsible for the full spectrum of warhead / rocket motor / DACS design and performance, fuzing, ignition, power sources, one-shot energetic initiation, and all other weapon systems safety device technology. This position is located in Tucson, Arizona. As the responsible engineering authority within the solid propulsion discipline, you will lead the overall propulsion design, development, and demonstration from concept to missile flight test. You will have cost and schedule responsibilities for suppliers within the Propulsion IPT and will communicate with RMD leadership to provide program status, accomplishments, issues, and help needed, while ensuring program alignment and teamwork. You will support proposal efforts with major suppliers while partnering with the supply chain to define future contract scope, schedule, and program start-up at the suppliers. Your role will involve applying or developing highly advanced technologies, scientific principles, theories, and concepts to the systems integration of propulsion, thrusters, controllers, software, mechanical and electrical interfaces for integration into missile systems and space vehicles. You will be involved with both development and production programs across Raytheon Product Lines, reviewing manufacturing processes and problem resolution, and working directly with subcontractors on the design and manufacturing of solid rocket motor propulsion systems. Additionally, you will manage propulsion system development projects and propulsion subcontracts, review and disposition subcontract data and change requests, and oversee supplier operations. You will also develop and deliver technical presentations to management and government agencies, frequently interfacing with the Customer to identify user needs.

Responsibilities

  • Apply or develop advanced technologies and scientific principles for systems integration of propulsion and related technologies.
  • Review manufacturing processes and problem resolution, working directly with subcontractors on solid rocket motor propulsion systems.
  • Manage propulsion system development projects and propulsion subcontracts, reviewing and dispositioning subcontract data and change requests.
  • Develop and deliver technical presentations to management and government agencies.
  • Interface with the Customer to identify user needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) or related degree.
  • Ten years of experience in propulsion technology and its application to solid propulsion systems or seven years with an advanced degree and related experience.
  • Experience managing a team of 3 or more in a technical capacity.
  • Active and transferable U.S. government issued security clearance is required prior to start date.

Nice-to-haves

  • MS in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Math, or related science degree.
  • Twelve plus years of directly related experience in propulsive technology and its application to solid or liquid, and/or mono propellant propulsion systems.
  • Systems knowledge to assure full development of propulsion requirements and dissemination and flow down to subordinate levels.
  • Project engineering skills and experience using Earned Value Management System.
  • Demonstrated success as a proposal/cost account manager as well as project/team leader.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and lead collaborative efforts with other technical disciplines including structural, thermal, aerodynamics and low observables.
  • Willingness to travel, including international, to provide supplier support.
  • Supplier collaboration experience and oversight generating specifications and statements of work (SOW).
  • Active Secret or Top Secret Clearance (Department of Defense).
