About the position

The R&D Mechanical Engineer position at Sandia National Laboratories involves designing, building, integrating, and maintaining mechanical systems that interface with automated and robotic systems. The role is part of a multidisciplinary team focused on developing high-consequence automated application systems aimed at addressing national security challenges. The engineer will be responsible for creating technical solutions, coordinating test plans, and troubleshooting existing systems, all while working onsite due to the nature of the work.

Responsibilities

  • Design mechanical and electrical systems/subsystems for integration into new and existing systems for physical security applications.
  • Integrate into multiple teams & projects that support programs across the development cycle.
  • Work with internal and external customers.
  • Apply a mix of computer, mechanical, and electrical skills to a wide variety of topics.
  • Develop and coordinate test plans to validate and verify system performance against requirements and specifications.
  • Manage task priority and schedule.
  • Participate in short turn troubleshooting, diagnostic and maintenance for existing deployed electromechanical systems.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Computer Science, plus two (2) years relevant experience; OR Bachelor's degree as stated above, plus five (5) years' experience.
  • Proficiency in mechanical design (CAD) software.
  • Two (2) years' experience designing and/or integrating complex electromechanical systems.
  • Experience troubleshooting and diagnosing complex systems.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain DOE Q-level security clearance.

Nice-to-haves

  • Demonstrated ability to work across multiple disciplines.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.
  • Experience designing, developing, controlling, and/or integrating autonomous or robotic systems.
  • Experience in programming low level motion control systems.
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks software.
  • Hands-on system assembly and/or maintenance experience.
  • Proficiency with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Experience operating and/or maintaining semi or fully automatic firearms.
  • Active DOE Q-level security clearance.
