About the position

The Senior/Principal Metal Advanced Manufacturing Engineer at Sandia National Laboratories will play a crucial role in the Advanced Metals Processing team, focusing on innovative manufacturing processes and technologies. This position involves working with metal additive manufacturing, developing and qualifying components, and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to solve complex material challenges. The engineer will oversee laboratory operations, ensure safety standards, and present findings to stakeholders, contributing to national security and technological advancements.

Responsibilities

  • Provide materials selection and manufacturing process development for metallic hardware.
  • Develop and execute test plans to assess the mechanical and physical properties of metallic alloys.
  • Create technical solutions to complex problems while collaborating with interdisciplinary teams.
  • Lead interactions with a variety of customers and seek funding opportunities to enable projects related to additive manufacturing.
  • Oversee safety and operations of a metal additive manufacturing laboratory, working closely with staff, technologists, and students.
  • Present findings at technical conferences and communicate results to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ensure all equipment is operational and adheres to safety standards and requirements.
  • Collaborate with technicians to design experiments for process development.
  • Provide expert recommendations on equipment, capabilities, and technology needs.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in materials science or engineering, metallurgical engineering, mechanical engineering, or related STEM field, plus one or more years' experience in additive manufacturing.
  • Experience with metal additive manufacturing processes and tools.
  • Experience with metallic manufacturing processes (e.g., additive manufacturing, heat treatment, machining) and property development (e.g., physical, mechanical, fracture).
  • Demonstrated proficiency in CAD software (CREO and SolidWorks).
  • Demonstrated experience with metallurgical characterization techniques and equipment, including optical microscopy, hardness testers, and mechanical property testing.
  • Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.

Nice-to-haves

  • PhD in materials science or engineering, metallurgical engineering, mechanical engineering, or related STEM field.
  • Experience performing failure analysis and fractography using advanced characterization techniques (e.g., SEM/EDS, FTIR spectrometer, DSC).
  • Demonstrated experience with part and process qualification, as well as the production of metal AM parts.
  • Experience with statistical process control (SPC) techniques and methodologies.
  • Knowledge and experience with post-processing equipment for producing and characterizing finished AM parts (e.g., wire EDM, surface grinders, metrology equipment).
  • Familiarity with GCode, CNC tools, and tool path generation.
  • Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills, with a passion for innovation in cutting-edge technology.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical information clearly and effectively.
  • Experience in developing and mentoring others to achieve success.
