About the position

The Senior Principal Process Engineer at Medtronic is responsible for developing and sustaining laser bond manufacturing processes. This hands-on role requires expertise in project management and continuous improvement techniques to drive successful project completion while ensuring compliance with regulations and safety standards. The position is based onsite at the Tempe, Arizona plant and involves collaboration with cross-functional teams to enhance manufacturing processes.

Responsibilities

  • Drive projects to successful completion using Project Management skills.
  • Utilize technical skills associated with Six Sigma, Lean, DRM/DFSS and other appropriate improvement techniques to drive continuous improvement.
  • Follow established procedures to perform detailed, accurate, and compliant engineering documentation for Master Validation Plans, pFMEA, Equipment Installation, Characterization, Qualification and Validation activities.
  • Perform duties in compliance with environmental, health and safety related site rules, policies, or governmental regulations.
  • Identify and work to remove barriers that slow or prevent the successful completion of projects.
  • Develops manufacturing processes that are applicable to statistical process control and may develop those techniques including the measurement systems.
  • Ensures processes and procedures are in compliance with regulations.
  • May develop and conduct statistical analysis or recommend additions to document work.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree plus a minimum of 10 years relevant hands-on experience with laser systems, optical components, and precision alignment processes or advanced degree plus a minimum of 8 years relevant experience.
  • Knowledge of optomechanical engineering principles, including mounting and alignment of optical components.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex optical and mechanical issues.
  • Strong understanding of laser systems, including harmonic generation, beam manipulation, and system integration.
  • Knowledge of G-codes and M-codes.
  • Familiarity with laboratory practices, including the use of spectrometers, power meters, and beam profilers.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to translate experimental data into actionable insights.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Experience with galvo systems and beam steering technologies.
  • Proficiency in tools such as optical design software (e.g., Zemax, Code V) and CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks).

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's or Ph.D. in Optical Sciences, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
