About the position

Sandia National Laboratories is seeking a Senior/Principal R&D Cybersecurity/Software Engineer to join our Cyber Threat team. This position is dedicated to the research and development of technologies that protect systems from cyber intrusions and threats. The successful candidate will engage in a variety of research areas, including manual and automated reverse engineering, vulnerability assessment, malware analysis, intrusion prevention and detection, penetration testing, and forensics. The role requires a deep understanding of network operations, information protection, and resiliency, as well as expertise in authentication, authorization, cryptography, and side channel analysis. As part of the R&D Cybersecurity team, you will work across a broad spectrum of technology, including embedded systems, mobile devices, desktop and enterprise systems, cloud technologies, and globally connected networks. You will be responsible for conducting threat assessments, analyzing government, military, and civilian computer networks, and developing protective technologies. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to national security missions and work with some of the best tools and research facilities available. Candidates should be passionate about cybersecurity and have a strong background in software engineering, with experience in programming languages such as C/C++, Java, and Python. The role requires the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q security clearance and SCI access, and candidates may be required to take a polygraph exam. This position is onsite, and relocation assistance will be provided to eligible candidates. Responsibilities

  • Conduct research and development in cybersecurity technologies.
  • Perform manual and automated reverse engineering and vulnerability assessments.
  • Analyze malware and conduct penetration testing and forensics.
  • Engage in network operations and information protection.
  • Develop and implement authentication and authorization mechanisms.
  • Utilize cryptography and side channel analysis techniques.
  • Conduct threat intelligence and modeling, simulation, and emulation.
  • Work with real-time operating systems and embedded systems, including IoT.
  • Develop protective technologies for mobile devices and smart technologies.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to address national security challenges.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Computer Science/Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Cybersecurity or relevant STEM discipline plus 2 years of relevant experience, OR equivalent (Bachelor's + 7 years).
  • Experience with writing code in one or more of the following: C/C++, Java, Python, hardware languages, assembly, or other languages.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain both a DOE Q security clearance and SCI security clearance, and willingness to take a polygraph exam if requested.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with assembly or operating system programming, application layer programming, Dev-Ops programming, and/or network layer programming.
  • Experience with reverse engineering, malware analysis, formal methods, or deciphering known and unknown file formats, data structures, and network protocols.
  • Experience with vulnerability research, system vulnerability assessments, high consequence high trust systems, mobile systems, embedded systems, OT/ICS/SCADA devices and systems, virtualization technologies, or firmware environments.
  • Experience with operating system design and security, driver development, low-level software debugging, hypervisor implementations, or memory management.
  • Demonstrated experience in data science, machine learning, information theory, and streaming and behavioral analytics.
