About the position

As a Senior Privacy and Data Governance Engineer within the iCloud Data organization, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of privacy for Apple's products and services. This position offers a unique opportunity to impact some of the most far-reaching software applications in the world, enabling iCloud users to seamlessly access their content across various applications such as Photos, Mail, Messages, FaceTime, and Calendar from all their devices. Your primary responsibility will be to provide a consistent, scalable, timely, accurate, complete, and fully integrated data infrastructure that surfaces relevant information while ensuring compliance with evolving privacy policies and regulations. In this role, you will act as a privacy champion, guiding the iCloud data team through the complexities of privacy and compliance challenges. You will collaborate with multi-functional teams across organizational boundaries to craft a comprehensive privacy and compliance strategy for upcoming initiatives. Your expertise will be crucial in designing new privacy-preserving data collection methodologies that facilitate the evaluation of iCloud products and services. You will also promote a culture of data minimization and strategize the implementation of technical data engineering and data science solutions that align with both iCloud data and business needs. Additionally, you will provide mentorship to data developers, equipping them with the right privacy and compliance approaches, frameworks, and solutions tailored to their specific use cases. By partnering with privacy champions across Services Engineering, you will ensure the application of consistent principles and unified solutions to address iCloud-specific privacy and compliance issues. This role requires a strong problem solver with meticulous attention to detail, capable of navigating loosely defined problems and driving impactful solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Work as a privacy champion across iCloud data, helping the team navigate evolving privacy policies, compliance, and regulatory requirements.
  • Partner with multi-functional teams to craft iCloud data's privacy and compliance strategy for upcoming initiatives.
  • Guide the design of new privacy-preserving data collection methodologies for evaluating iCloud products and services.
  • Promote a culture of data minimization and implement technical data engineering and data science solutions that meet iCloud data and business needs.
  • Provide mentorship to data developers on privacy and compliance approaches, frameworks, and solutions.
  • Collaborate with privacy champions across Services Engineering to ensure consistent principles and unified solutions for iCloud-specific privacy and compliance problems.

Requirements

  • Passion for solving customer and data privacy challenges to unlock key data and business outcomes.
  • Deep understanding of privacy principles, data protection regulations, and technical expertise to implement privacy-enhancing solutions.
  • Experience in collaborating with multi-functional teams to embed privacy principles into the design and architecture of iCloud products and services.
  • Ability to conduct privacy impact assessments for new and existing products and features, analyzing system architectures to assess privacy exposures and suggest mitigations.
  • Experience in creating and enforcing privacy and compliance policies and guidelines within the iCloud data team.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with meticulous attention to detail, capable of addressing loosely defined problems.
  • 8+ years of software engineering experience with proficiency in at least one high-level programming language (Java, Scala, or Python).
  • 5+ years of experience assessing data privacy and compliance risks, recommending mitigating controls, and implementing solutions.
  • Strong background in distributed systems and distributed data processing, with strong SQL skills.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, engaging with multi-functional teams to influence iCloud data's overall privacy and compliance strategy.
  • MS or BS or equivalent experience in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics or a related field OR equivalent practical experience in Software or Data Engineering.

Nice-to-haves

  • Industry experience in Privacy-Enhancing Technologies for large-scale distributed systems.
  • Experience with differential privacy.
