About the position

Johnson & Johnson MedTech is seeking a Senior Process Engineer for Advanced Product Management in Irvine, CA. This role is pivotal in addressing complex engineering challenges and driving cost reduction initiatives across various products and materials. The Senior Process Engineer will engage in a diverse range of tasks that require a thorough analysis of data and the evaluation of multiple factors to enhance product efficiency and financial viability. The position demands a comprehensive understanding of both mechanical and electrical design, as well as programming logic, to develop innovative solutions that align with the company's commitment to healthcare innovation. In this role, the engineer will provide essential engineering and design services to research and development, manufacturing, and production engineering teams. Responsibilities include developing concepts, designs, and detailed specifications for machines, tools, fixtures, and products. The engineer will also conduct hands-on and simulated testing for design verification and method development, ensuring that all engineering documentation related to assigned projects is meticulously reviewed and edited. This includes technical reports, work instructions, and process validation documentation. The Senior Process Engineer will lead complex engineering operations and scientific evaluations on new products and technology concepts, applying advanced algebraic and geometric formulas to create effective product configurations. The role also involves inspecting and overseeing the testing of prototypes and tools to ensure compliance with specifications. Collaboration with suppliers to acquire new equipment and ensuring adherence to customs and production readiness is also a key responsibility. Additionally, the engineer will delegate tasks to junior engineers and technicians, ensuring that all activities are completed in a timely manner while adhering to health, safety, and environmental guidelines.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the cost reduction efforts of all products, materials, and techniques using engineering principles and financial impacts.
  • Performs complex hands-on and simulated testing for design verification and test method developments.
  • Reviews and edits all engineering documentation related to assigned projects, such as technical reports, work instructions, and method and process validation.
  • Leads complex engineering operations and scientific evaluation on new products, technology concepts, and product development.
  • Applies complex algebraic and geometric formulas and advanced tool engineering data to develop product configurations.
  • Inspects and oversees testing of prototypes, tools, and fixtures after fabrication to ensure that they meet specifications.
  • Works with suppliers to acquire new equipment, machines, and devices for production ensuring they comply with customs, EH&S, and production readiness.
  • Delegates assignments to junior Engineers and/or technicians to ensure all activities are completed within a timely manner while following all company guidelines related to Health, Safety, and Environmental practices.

Requirements

  • A minimum of 4 years of relevant work experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to effectively work at all levels of management, to clearly present information, and respond to questions from groups of managers, peers, and customers.
  • Must be able to work with minimum supervision and guidance.
  • Ability to lead multiple projects in parallel while upholding timelines.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Suite (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, etc.).
  • Advanced knowledge with Solidworks/AutoCAD.
  • Ability to work under a microscope and with hands-on applications.
  • Ability to use machining equipment, hand tools, and measuring tools (e.g., mill, lathe, grinder, hand drill, calipers, etc.).
  • Ability to wire and solder small electronics.
  • Strong understanding of fundamental engineering principles and design methods.
  • Ability to come up with new design concepts and solutions to address process improvement, cost savings, machine modularity, or product design/functions.
  • Knowledge of 'good manufacturing/documentation practices', preferably in the medical device industry.

Nice-to-haves

  • Lean Six Sigma knowledge is a plus.
  • Experience using metrology equipment and performing non-destructive/destructive testing.
  • Programming - Python, C, Matlab, PLC, microcontrollers, or computer vision experience.
  • Experience with automation or robotic systems.
  • Experience with Minitab or similar statistical analysis tools.
  • Fluency in Spanish, Mandarin, or Cantonese is a plus.
