About the position

The Senior Process Engineer, Industrial Water, will play a crucial role in this vision by supporting project proposals and applications across various markets including Manufacturing, Energy, Power, Food and Beverage, Hi-Tech, Mining, and Pharma. This position is based in Washington, DC, but the candidate can also work from other office locations such as Burlington, MA; New York, NY; Richmond, VA; Chicago, IL; Ann Arbor, MI; Minneapolis, MN; and Columbus, OH. The Senior Process Engineer will be responsible for networking with engineering, environmental, and water professionals to execute technical projects and drive business development initiatives. This role involves evaluating, selecting, specifying, and engineering systems or products for projects, performing calculations, creating design sketches, preparing reports, and conducting fieldwork. The engineer will analyze projects to ensure they meet safety, reliability, resource efficiency, and cost-effectiveness standards. Additionally, the role includes developing detailed proposals and engaging in business development activities to foster long-term client relationships. Key responsibilities include performing complex engineering design tasks, collaborating with various technical disciplines, and leading the development of project construction specifications. The engineer will also conduct quality assurance and control, review contractor/vendor submittals, and assist in the permitting process. Mentoring and supervising staff, managing project scope, budget, and schedule, and preparing construction documents are also essential functions of this role. The Senior Process Engineer will ensure that project needs are met effectively and timely, while also participating in business development pursuits and client interactions.

Responsibilities

  • Perform business development/application tasks and collaborate with staff to increase project wins and develop long lasting client relationships.
  • Participate in business line teams to manage and develop proposals.
  • Act as the client-facing contact for business development, meetings, and presentations.
  • Prepare scope of work documents and estimates.
  • Develop division of responsibility (DOR) matrices.
  • Collaborate with multiple business lines to develop opportunities.
  • Conduct quality reviews of proposals and projects.
  • Perform complex engineering design tasks on assigned water, power, and industrial process and wastewater-related projects.
  • Prepare design basis documents and engineering calculations including mass and energy balances.
  • Create engineering drawings and reports, and conduct feasibility studies.
  • Present findings to clients, regulatory agencies, and project stakeholders.
  • Engage in the development of designs through sketches, electronic models, and diagrams.
  • Assist project managers with developing and managing project scope, budget, staffing, and schedule.
  • Lead the development and coordination of project construction specifications.
  • Conduct quality assurance and quality control on assigned projects and facilitate independent technical reviews.
  • Review contractor/vendor submittals for adherence to contract documents and industry standards.
  • Coordinate with regulatory reviews to seek final project approval.
  • Assist in the development and updates of project design standards and guidelines; prepare abstracts and technical papers.
  • Manage a team of design professionals and technicians.
  • Mentor and supervise staff to develop high-performing project teams.
  • Assist with business development pursuits including proposal preparation and participation in interviews.
  • Interact with clients and management regarding project status, scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Lead and manage preparation of construction documents including plans, specifications, and construction cost estimates.
  • Research and understand issues related to regulatory and other drivers impacting projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Mechanical, Chemical, or Civil/Environmental Engineering from an accredited institution; Master's degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of total experience, with at least 2 years of operational experience being a plus.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred or ability to obtain within twelve (12) months.
  • Ability to perform mass & energy balance and hydraulic calculations.
  • Detailed knowledge of developing piping & instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs).
  • Ability to drive development of process control narratives for programming of process control systems.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Excellent time-management skills and ability to prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Understanding of local and regional jurisdictional codes, legal and design requirements in relevant jurisdictions.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe; experience with software such as Fathom, Arrow, ASPEN.
