About the position

Stantec's Water business is a collaborative environment where top engineers and scientists work together to view water as a holistic system. The Senior Process Engineer will play a crucial role in this mission, focusing on sustainable solutions that ensure water is available when needed. This position is based in various locations across the United States, including Burlington, MA; New York, NY; and Chicago, IL, among others. The Senior Process Engineer will support project proposals and applications primarily in the US North Region, engaging with markets such as Manufacturing, Energy, Power, Food and Beverage, Hi-Tech, Mining, and Pharma. In this role, the Senior Process Engineer will be responsible for networking with engineering, environmental, and water professionals to execute technical projects and drive business development initiatives. The engineer will evaluate, select, specify, and design systems or products for projects, performing tasks that include calculations, design sketches, report preparation, and fieldwork. The projects will vary in scope, requiring the engineer to analyze them for safety, reliability, resource efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. Business development activities will involve understanding client needs and identifying solution opportunities, as well as developing detailed proposals for diverse project settings. Key responsibilities include performing complex engineering design tasks, collaborating with various technical disciplines, and engaging in the development of designs through sketches and electronic models. The Senior Process Engineer will also assist project managers in managing project scope, budget, staffing, and schedule, while leading the development of project construction specifications. Quality assurance and control will be critical, as will the review of contractor/vendor submittals for compliance with contract documents and industry standards. The engineer will also be involved in the permitting process, coordinating with regulatory reviews to secure final approvals. Additionally, mentoring and supervising design professionals and technicians will be part of the role, ensuring the development of high-performing project teams.

Responsibilities

  • Perform business development/application tasks and collaborate with staff to increase project wins and develop long-lasting client relationships.
  • Participate in business line teams to manage and develop proposals.
  • Act as the client-facing contact for business development, meetings, and presentations.
  • Prepare scope of work documents and estimates.
  • Create division of responsibility (DOR) matrices.
  • Collaborate with multiple business lines to develop opportunities and conduct quality reviews.
  • Perform complex engineering design tasks on assigned water, power, and industrial process and wastewater-related projects.
  • Develop design basis documents, engineering calculations, engineering drawings, and engineering reports.
  • Conduct feasibility studies and present findings to clients, regulatory agencies, and project stakeholders.
  • Engage in the development of designs through sketches, electronic models, and diagrams.
  • Assist project managers with developing and managing project scope, budget, staffing, and schedule.
  • Lead the development and coordination of project construction specifications.
  • Conduct quality assurance and quality control on assigned projects and facilitate independent technical reviews.
  • Review contractor/vendor submittals for adherence to contract documents and industry standards.
  • Coordinate with regulatory reviews to seek final approval for projects.
  • Assist in the development and updates of project design standards and guidelines; prepare abstracts and technical papers.
  • Manage a team of design professionals and technicians, mentoring and supervising staff to develop high-performing project teams.
  • Interact with clients and management regarding the status of project scope, schedule, and budget.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Chemical, or Civil/Environmental Engineering from an accredited institution; Master's degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of total experience, with at least 2 years of operational experience being a plus.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred or ability to obtain within twelve months.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to perform mass & energy balance and hydraulic calculations.
  • Detailed knowledge of developing piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs).
  • Ability to drive the development of process control narratives for programming of process control systems.
  • General understanding of all phases of project document production, client procurement procedures, and regulatory approval processes.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe; experience with software such as Fathom, Arrow, ASPEN.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in the water, power, and industrial process sectors.
  • Familiarity with local and regional jurisdictional codes, legal and design requirements in relevant jurisdictions.
  • Experience in mentoring and developing junior staff.
