About the position

The Senior Product Designer at Heroku is responsible for creating world-class developer experiences for a platform-as-a-service (PaaS) that operates on a global scale. This role emphasizes collaboration with cross-functional teams, including user research, engineering, and product management, to design and iterate on solutions that prioritize user needs and enhance the overall experience for developers. The designer will engage in hands-on design work, from ideation to prototyping, while ensuring that the final products are visually appealing and user-friendly.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with the User Research team to validate and test new ideas for developer experiences.
• Partner with the Design team and Product Managers to define, ideate, and iterate on design solutions.
• Develop user flows, experience maps, and other artifacts that effectively communicate the desired end experience.
• Create screens and prototypes that illustrate the proposed design solutions.
• Work with Engineering to deliver front ends that are turned into working products.
• Focus on the details to create beautiful products that enhance user experience and build trust with customers.

Requirements

• Proficient in Figma as the main design tool, with the ability to transition from Sketch if necessary.
• Ability to create interactive prototypes using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
• Strong systems thinking skills to identify connections between different parts of product experiences.
• Knowledgeable in visual design fundamentals including layout, color, and typography.
• Dedication to learning from users and understanding user research methods.
• Extensive knowledge of accessibility (a11y) best practices in design.
• Strong presentation and communication skills to effectively convey design rationale to various stakeholders.
• Self-motivated with the ability to balance design goals and deadlines.
• Experience working in a high-performance design team, with a focus on constructive feedback.
• Ability to produce results independently and as part of a larger design team.
• An online design portfolio showcasing outputs and thought processes for complex design challenges.

Nice-to-haves

• Familiarity with advanced features in Figma, such as variables and autolayout.
• Experience with the Ember.js framework.
• Background in mobile app design, analytic/infographic design, and icon design.
• Experience documenting design styles and creating UI pattern libraries.
• Experience designing developer tools, particularly involving APIs, text user interfaces (TUI), and command line interfaces (CLI).
• Experience using Heroku itself.
• 5+ years of experience in digital product design, preferably in a technology company with B2B/Enterprise exposure.
• An Undergraduate or Master's degree in User Experience, Human Factors, Human Computer Interaction, or a related field with a focus on design or research.
