About the position

This position is responsible for new product development and existing product enhancements for commercial property and casualty products. The role involves supporting the goals and implementing best practices across all operating units and the Enterprise, exercising discretion and judgment to ensure operational consistency and integrity. The position manages complex business processes and improvement efforts across multiple departments, contributing to various initiatives and lines of business.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze, research, and report on underwriting trends, issues, laws, rules, regulations, and best practices, providing recommendations as appropriate.
  • Develop and maintain forms (admitted/non-admitted) and coordinate internal form committee alignment.
  • Oversee rule manual development and maintenance, as well as coordinate rate development.
  • Identify, solve, and manage problem markets effectively.
  • Assist in developing enterprise underwriting policies, procedures, and best practices.
  • Implement and monitor policies, practices, procedures, and workflows.
  • Outline improvement opportunities and coach management on ways to improve.
  • Participate in the identification, preparation, and presentation of training programs at both Operating Unit and Enterprise levels.
  • Serve as a technical expert and consultant in Corporate Underwriting, addressing questions and concerns from all operating units.
  • Collaborate with enterprise operating units and Corporate Underwriting to support cost containment strategies.
  • Represent Corporate Underwriting and the enterprise on various committees and events as approved.
  • Perform special projects as assigned and evaluate the effectiveness of departmental programs and projects.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all processed information.
  • Lead research, analysis, and implementation of new or existing product ideas and enhancements for multiple commercial lines of insurance.
  • Evaluate the cost-benefit of product initiatives and recommend actions based on evaluations.
  • Conduct full policy wording reviews for renewals to ensure compliance with underwriting guidelines.
  • Develop short and long-term strategic product and underwriting strategies to support business and profitability goals.
  • Create best practices and training to engage the enterprise.
  • Manage key compliance and regulatory relationships, including product objection management.
  • Act as a key contact for developing and implementing new products or organizational practices specific to the product.
  • Maintain expert knowledge of state regulations, compliance, coverages, operational processes, underwriting criteria, and system applications.
  • Support complex ISO-based and proprietary changes, coordinating with business partners to develop complete filing packages.
  • Research and approve complex updates and changes to ISO, NCCI, and regulatory product updates, applying expert knowledge and problem-solving skills.
  • Recommend actions based on regulatory changes and collaborate with business partners to resolve noncompliance issues.
  • Work with third-party vendors and manage consultant relationships to integrate product needs based on market and technical requirements.
  • Assist in new market development, including creating and supporting business cases and acting as a liaison to involved departments.
  • Analyze new opportunity design, build, and implementation, serving as a liaison between Corporate Underwriting and Operating Units.
  • Draft, develop, and implement new products or organizational practices specific to the product, applying expert guidance for regulated states and complex filings.
  • Develop new product ideas, review existing products, draft new coverage language, and execute the Product Development Life Cycle.
  • Establish enterprise quality control and governance standards, maintaining a clear understanding of business requirements and applying expert product knowledge throughout the functional design process.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Insurance, Business, Math, Finance, or a related field required.
  • Minimum ten years of commercial property and casualty underwriting experience, with strong multi-line experience.
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge with both small and large accounts or equivalent experience.
  • Two years of experience as a Corporate Underwriting Consultant or equivalent experience is preferred.
  • Progress towards or completion of industry-recognized professional designations (i.e., CIC, AU, CPCU) is preferred.
