About the position

The Product Manager for Yahoo News will lead the refinement and improvement of algorithms that enhance the recommendations experience for users. This role involves collaborating with journalists and engineers to develop core ranking models, ensuring that relevant content is surfaced effectively to help users understand the world around them. The position requires a strategic approach to product management, focusing on machine learning applications and addressing challenges such as cold-start problems for new users and articles.

Responsibilities

• Develop and execute a core ranking product strategy that enhances the Yahoo News recommendations experience through machine learning and LLMs.
• Partner with data scientists, engineers, and journalists to design, test, and refine ranking models.
• Develop strategies for addressing cold-start problems with new users/articles.
• Balance personalization with diversity and editorial priorities in ranking.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment with overall product goals and timelines.
• Provide clear communication and documentation to keep stakeholders informed about product developments and algorithmic enhancements.
• Analyze ranking performance and conduct A/B tests.
• Implement quality assurance processes to monitor and evaluate algorithmic outputs, proactively identifying and addressing issues related to content accuracy, bias, quality, or misinformation.
• Develop product vision for local news across Yahoo surfaces.

Requirements

• 5+ years of product management experience, including 2+ years of ML product management experience.
• Strong technical background in machine learning or recommendation systems.
• Experience with A/B testing and experimentation.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Quantitative skills for data analysis combined with excellent product sense.
• Strong entrepreneurial spirit with a passion for identifying and driving new data-led opportunities.
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with stakeholders at all levels.
• Experience working with engineering teams and a deep understanding of machine learning and LLMs.
