About the position

The Senior Programmer at Broward County Public Schools is responsible for developing and enhancing both new and existing programming application systems. This role involves a variety of essential performance responsibilities that contribute to the overall functionality and efficiency of the school's information systems. The Senior Programmer will create, review, analyze, and modify programming systems using specific programming languages such as COBOL, ABAP, and .NET. The position requires the individual to develop, code, test, verify, and implement programming changes into production based on provided specifications. Additionally, the programmer will maintain and enhance existing systems, ensuring they meet the evolving needs of the school district. In this role, the Senior Programmer will assist in designing, creating, and analyzing data interfaces between various information systems. They will also provide insights to supervisors or systems analysts regarding system performance based on coding changes and prepare necessary system documentation and program specifications. While this position does not have supervisory responsibilities, the Senior Programmer may lead small developmental projects or subsets of larger projects, offering technical guidance to lower-level programmers as needed. The programmer is expected to participate in training programs to enhance their skills and proficiency related to their responsibilities, as well as stay updated on current developments and technical literature relevant to their work. The Senior Programmer must adhere to safety rules and procedures, follow federal and state laws, and comply with School Board policies. They will also perform other duties as assigned by their immediate supervisor or designee, contributing to a collaborative and compliant work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Create, review, analyze, and modify programming systems using specific programming languages (e.g., COBOL, ABAP, NET).
  • Develop, code, test, verify and move programming changes into production based on provided specifications.
  • Maintain and enhance existing systems.
  • Assist in designing, creating, and analyzing data interfaces between information systems.
  • Advise supervisor or systems analysts of how system will perform based on coding changes.
  • Prepare system documentation and program specifications as needed.
  • May lead small developmental projects or subsets of larger developmental projects, providing technical guidance to lower level programmers.
  • Perform and promote all activities in compliance with the equal employment and non-discrimination policies of The School Board of Broward County, Florida.
  • Participate in training programs to enhance individual skills and proficiency related to responsibilities.
  • Review current developments, literature, and technical sources of information related to responsibilities.
  • Ensure adherence to safety rules and procedures.
  • Follow federal and state laws, as well as School Board policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor or designee.

Requirements

  • An earned bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience in creating, reviewing, analyzing, and modifying programming systems within the last ten (10) years; or an earned associate's degree with a minimum of seven (7) years of experience; or a standard high school diploma or GED with a minimum of ten (10) years of experience within the last twelve (12) years.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Progressively more responsible work experience in programming design and implementation.
  • Demonstrated experience in the use of COBOL, ABAP, or web development tools such as ASP.NET, VB.NET, Java, JavaScript, C#, Visual Studio, Web Parts, Web Widgets, SQL.
  • Bilingual skills.
