About the position

The Senior Project Coordinator for the Public Realm Unit at the York City Department of Transportation (DOT) plays a crucial role in enhancing the livability of the city's streets. This position is situated within the Office of Livable Streets (OLS) under the Division of Transportation Planning & Management (TPM). The primary responsibility of the Senior Project Coordinator is to develop and implement pedestrian-centered interim and capital projects that align with the DOT's mission of ensuring safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible transportation. The role requires a comprehensive understanding of urban planning, community engagement, and project management, as the candidate will lead projects from initial research and analysis through public engagement and recommendations to project delivery. The Senior Project Coordinator will conduct thorough information gathering and analysis, which includes evaluating traffic and crash data, assessing field conditions, and understanding community characteristics. The candidate will also create CAD drawings to illustrate existing and proposed traffic conditions, ensuring that project proposals are effectively communicated. A strong emphasis is placed on traffic calming techniques and streetscape design considerations, as the coordinator will need to recommend findings based on the latest planning theories and operational demands in dense urban environments. In addition to technical skills, the role requires strong design, photography, and graphic skills to convey project proposals effectively. The candidate will be expected to work both independently and collaboratively, demonstrating a strong problem-solving mindset and the ability to communicate effectively with various stakeholders. Supervision of interns and support staff may also be part of the responsibilities. The ideal candidate should be detail-oriented, accurate, and possess a positive attitude, ensuring adherence to all agency safety rules and regulations to create a safe work environment for themselves and colleagues.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement pedestrian-centered interim and capital projects.

  • Create and deliver public presentations regarding project proposals.
  • Manage project priorities and schedules, coordinating with local partners.
  • Conduct thorough information gathering and analysis, including traffic and crash data, field conditions, and community characteristics.
  • Create CAD drawings to illustrate existing and proposed traffic conditions.
  • Recommend findings based on traffic calming techniques and streetscape design considerations.
  • Coordinate with other DOT units, city agencies, and community entities.
  • Supervise interns and support staff as necessary.
  • Participate in group work collaboratively and inclusively, fostering professional development.

Requirements

  • A master's degree in transportation engineering, mathematics, urban planning, architecture, landscape architecture, urban studies, or related physical and social science fields.
  • A baccalaureate degree in engineering from an accredited college and one year of full-time satisfactory experience performing technical work on roadway transportation and traffic studies and area-wide traffic programs.
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of full-time satisfactory experience as described above.
  • An associate degree or completion of 60 semester credits from an accredited college and four years of full-time satisfactory experience as described above.
  • A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and six years of full-time satisfactory experience as described above.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with AutoCAD, ArcGIS, Microsoft Word, Power Point, Excel, and graphics software, including the Adobe Suite.
  • Knowledge of traffic calming, urban design issues, and traffic engineering.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and oral presentation skills.
