About the position

HMC Architects is seeking a Senior Project Designer specializing in Interiors to join our Ontario, California office. This role is pivotal in conceptual development and execution of creative deliverables for our clients, leveraging a wide range of skills within the Interior Design and Interior Architectural disciplines. The Senior Project Designer will be responsible for creating and communicating innovative design concepts, implementing creative solutions, and justifying these concepts to clients, consultants, and project team members. This position requires a balance of creative thinking and strong interpersonal skills, as the designer will engage with various stakeholders to ensure project success. The Senior Project Designer will manage creative projects from inception to completion, translating client objectives into innovative solutions while maintaining design integrity throughout all project phases. This includes leading office design dialogues and charrettes to foster collaboration and innovation, as well as establishing productive working relationships with clients, team members, and consultants. The role also involves mentoring and coaching junior team members, ensuring they receive performance-enhancing feedback and support. In addition to design responsibilities, the Senior Project Designer will engage in business development and client engagement activities. This includes maintaining primary contact with clients, writing and developing project marketing collateral, and confidently presenting design concepts in public forums. The designer will also participate in industry events and networking opportunities to cultivate client relationships and generate new project leads. Overall, this position is integral to HMC's mission of designing for good and making a positive impact in our communities.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain primary contact with clients and ensure excellent follow-through to secure repeat work.
  • Write, develop, and approve project marketing collateral, including proposals.
  • Present design concepts in large public forums, demonstrating clear communication and visual storytelling.
  • Market projects through client interviews and professional publications.
  • Engage in industry events and networking opportunities to cultivate client relationships.
  • Prepare and negotiate RFPs, fees, and contracts with clients and consultants.
  • Manage creative projects from concept to completion, translating client objectives into innovative solutions.
  • Collaborate with the project design team to maintain design integrity throughout all project phases.
  • Lead office design dialogues and charrettes to enhance the studio's design culture.
  • Direct communication of project concepts to clients and project teams, serving as a primary contact for interior design issues.
  • Set goals, prioritize tasks, and strategically plan work activities for project teams.
  • Delegate tasks effectively while maintaining accountability and support for team members.
  • Monitor employee performance and conduct evaluations with personnel.
  • Assist in preparing and reviewing design deliverables across all project phases.

Requirements

  • Architectural, Interior Design or Art degree from an accredited university or equivalent proficiency.
  • Minimum thirteen (13) years of professional interior design experience with direct client contact.
  • NCIDQ, CID, or NCARB Licensure required.
  • Proficient in Revit; experience in Rhino preferred.
  • Working experience with Department of Health Care Access and Information (HCAi) and Division of the State Architect (DSA).
