About the position

The Senior Project Engineer for Solar/BESS at Clearway Energy Group is responsible for overseeing the detailed design package for solar and energy storage projects across the U.S. This role involves managing both internal and external teams to ensure optimized designs, participating in contract negotiations, and supporting construction and commissioning activities. The position requires collaboration with various internal departments and external stakeholders to ensure project success.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the technical lead and primary design point of contact for solar project development and construction teams.
  • Manage resources to finalize site due diligence, project costs, schedules, energy output, and risks with EPC contractors or developers.
  • Review engineering deliverables to ensure compliance with contractual cost and performance requirements.
  • Develop and evaluate energy input assessments and power output expectations.
  • Optimize site layouts and equipment selection to maximize performance and minimize lifecycle costs.
  • Direct activities of designers, consultants, and contractors, managing meetings to ensure efficient resource use and timely deliverables.
  • Write, edit, and review technical documents including scope of work, specifications, and feasibility studies.
  • Negotiate technical aspects of EPC contracts and interconnect agreements.
  • Coordinate with the Development team and external consultants for energy resource predictions and production simulations.
  • Manage contractor deliverables during construction to meet critical milestones.
  • Support construction as a technical escalation point to mitigate delays and maintain project scope.
  • Represent Clearway in negotiations and meetings with clients, developers, suppliers, and regulatory authorities.
  • Contribute to Clearway's technology roadmap and project management processes.

Requirements

  • B.S. degree in mechanical, electrical, or civil engineering, or a related subject.
  • Minimum 6+ years of solar and storage industry experience, including 5+ years of direct EPC experience in solar project design, permitting, and construction.
  • Understanding of solar and storage project design and optimization tradeoffs.
  • Familiarity with the current solar and storage market, equipment suppliers, and typical technical specifications.
  • Experience with solar and storage project financing and independent engineer requirements.
  • Knowledge of solar and storage energy estimates, losses, and standards.
  • Experience in reviewing and negotiating engineering, procurement, and construction contracts for solar facilities.
  • Experience managing consultants and contractors.
  • Working knowledge of relevant US and IEC equipment standards and construction practices.
  • Detail-oriented and self-motivated with the ability to work in a dynamic environment.
  • Willingness to travel.
