About the position

At Relativity Space, we are on a mission to revolutionize the aerospace industry and push the boundaries of additive manufacturing. As a Senior Propulsion Engineer on the Engine Systems & Test Team, you will play a pivotal role in the development and testing of our innovative propulsion systems for the Terran R rocket. This position involves a multifaceted approach to engineering, where you will engage in system-level architecture, requirements management, and interface negotiations to optimize engine performance for our launch vehicle. Your expertise will be crucial in driving engine system trades and supporting the overall development of our engine systems. In this role, you will collaborate closely with component engineers, manufacturing teams, and test teams to ensure that our engines are designed and tested to meet the rigorous demands of space launch. You will be expected to lead projects with minimal oversight, demonstrating your ability to coordinate and facilitate among various technical teams while applying your deep technical knowledge to solve complex problems. Your contributions will not only enhance the technical capabilities of our engines but also support the growth and development of your colleagues in a fast-paced startup environment. As part of our commitment to continuous improvement, you will have the opportunity to engage in engine system analysis, simulation, and tool development. This role requires a proactive mindset, as you will be encouraged to seek out opportunities for personal and professional growth while contributing to the success of our ambitious projects. With an average of 15% travel to test and launch sites, you may also need to adapt your schedule for critical milestones, including occasional weekend work.

Responsibilities

  • Drive engine system architecture and CONOPS trades.
  • Manage engine interfaces and negotiate requirements to optimize for the vehicle.
  • Support overall engine system development.
  • Engage in engine system analysis and simulation.
  • Participate in engine testing and tool development.
  • Coordinate and facilitate among technical teams to solve complex problems.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a science, engineering, technology, or mathematics field.
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in complex engineering system development and/or test environment.
  • Strong engineering fundamentals in fluid mechanics and thermodynamics.
  • Clear evidence of ownership, problem-solving skills, and effective team collaboration.
  • Demonstrated drive to deliver on ambitious schedules with unconventional solutions.
  • Working knowledge of liquid-propellant rocket engines.

Nice-to-haves

  • Working knowledge of fluid components such as valves and instrumentation.
  • Working knowledge of engine subsystems such as combustion devices and turbomachinery.
