About the position

The Senior Protection and Controls Engineer position at Sargent & Lundy involves applying expertise in protective relaying and control systems for high voltage substations. The role focuses on preparing schematics and wiring drawings for substation modifications, developing protective relaying philosophies, and troubleshooting various protection and control issues. The engineer will also mentor less experienced engineers and may require travel for design reviews and field verification.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare protection and control schematics and wiring drawings for substation modifications and upgrades.
  • Develop protective relaying philosophies, including selection of relay, control, and communications equipment.
  • Investigate, troubleshoot, and solve substation protection and control issues.
  • Prepare designs for single line diagrams, substation relaying & metering diagrams, and D.C. schematic diagrams.
  • Perform independent reviews of work performed by others.
  • Mentor less experienced engineers and share knowledge through peer-learning.

Requirements

  • BS in Electrical Engineering with a power systems or controls emphasis from an ABET-accredited program.
  • 5+ years of experience in protection/control/telecommunications for high voltage substations.
  • Experience with design techniques, tools, and principles for technical plans and drawings.
  • Familiarity with design codes and standards such as NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE, and ANSI.
  • Experience with vendor protective relay equipment used in substation protection.
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with in-line, bus and equipment protection, breaker, transformer control, RTU and SCADA systems.
  • Familiarity with telemetering and communications (fiber optics, microwave, power line carrier).
  • Experience with AutoCAD or MicroStation.
  • Construction and start-up experience.
  • Testing or commissioning experience.
  • PE license.
