About the position

The Senior Public Health Nurse plays a crucial role in the Public Health Services Department, overseeing nursing staff and programs aimed at improving community health. This position involves planning, organizing, and supervising nursing activities, providing guidance on nursing issues, and collaborating with community groups to develop health services and educational programs. The nurse will also conduct training, manage public health clinics, and ensure proper patient follow-up and counseling, all while maintaining confidentiality and adhering to public health regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, organizes, and supervises the work of staff in an assigned program.
  • Selects, assigns, trains, and evaluates assigned staff; provides guidance on nursing issues.
  • Works with community groups to develop health services and educational programs.
  • Coordinates assigned program services and reviews legislation to assess impact on programs.
  • Conducts orientations and in-service training for program providers and staff.
  • Assists with the preparation and revision of public health program plans and budgets.
  • Insures proper patient follow-up and counseling for clients referred for further diagnosis and treatment.
  • Provides public health nursing education and health counseling services through various outreach methods.
  • Interviews patients, takes case histories, and performs nursing assessments.
  • Provides health-related information to clients and serves as a resource on health issues.

Requirements

  • Possession of a valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse in California.
  • Possession of a California State Public Health Nursing Certificate.
  • Three years of increasingly responsible nursing experience post-bachelor's degree, including two years in community-based nursing.
