About the position

The Senior Quality Assurance (QA) Engineer at Tesla, Inc. is responsible for supporting quality inspection processes, conducting root cause analysis, and performing critical analysis of Li-ion cell components in both manufacturing and lab environments. This role involves collaboration with cross-functional teams to ensure high-quality production of cells, establishing quality control tasks, and resolving manufacturing quality issues. The engineer will also participate in audits, drive continuous improvement projects, and provide feedback on design for manufacturability.

Responsibilities

  • Support incoming quality inspection and root cause analysis.
  • Conduct critical Li-ion cell component analysis and data analysis in manufacturing and lab environments.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure production lines produce high-quality cells.
  • Define and establish incoming quality control tasks for manufacturing capability and product reliability.
  • Coordinate non-conforming cell process flows and evaluate suspect materials.
  • Identify and resolve cell-related manufacturing quality issues.
  • Define containment and disposition criteria based on quality requirements.
  • Plan and participate in audits of Tesla and supplier manufacturing lines.
  • Drive cross-functional projects to test product specifications and tolerances.
  • Collaborate with suppliers to implement Process Change Requests (PCRs).
  • Initiate continuous improvement projects within Tesla manufacturing and at suppliers.
  • Support Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) activities.
  • Provide Design for Manufacturability (DFM) feedback to engineering.
  • Produce data visualizations and prepare presentations of technical findings.
  • Develop custom test methods to solve critical cell engineering issues.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field, and five years of progressive experience in quality assurance within a manufacturing environment.
  • Alternatively, a Master's degree or equivalent in the same fields and three years of experience in quality assurance within a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience in transitioning products from prototype to production.
  • Project management experience.
  • Ability to create reports and database tools for management.
  • Data analysis experience using Statistical Process Control (SPC), Pareto, Six Sigma, or process capability studies.
  • Proficiency in SQL, Python, MATLAB, or R.
  • Problem-solving methodology experience using DMAIC, 8D, or Ishikawa.
  • Familiarity with Tableau, JMP, or Minitab.
